Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Yōtei has unveiled several novel aspects so far, such as its innovative clue system, camping, and the Wolf Pack. Among these, the most captivating is the ability to wield various weapons, a feature that supersedes the stances from Ghost of Tsushima. Unlike Jin Sakai who won’t be present in the sequel, Atsu uses a katana just like him, but she can also employ a yari, dual swords, kusarigama, and odachi.
As a gamer, I’ve found that each type of weapon excels against specific foes, and although swapping weapons might seem like the optimal strategy according to co-director Nate Fox, it’s not something I’ll be compelled to do. The game encourages players to master the art of switching weapons when necessary, as it offers the most efficient gaming experience, as Nate shared with IGN.
Go ahead and play however you like, as long as it makes you feel the most stylish! You’re free to use two swords in each hand throughout the game if you find that looks cool on you. No worries, it’s perfectly fine!
In essence, what Fox is saying is that they’ve expanded upon the fighting styles in Tsushima by introducing an additional one, making a total of five. Instead of having four different ways to wield a single weapon, they’ve applied the same concept to various melee weapons. So, while it functions similarly to the original stances, it offers more variety and options for combat.
For example, if you select a spear in this game, it allows you to push opponents back in space. If you’re battling near a precipice, you can shove them off the edge and send them tumbling into the void. This function is similar to stances, but each weapon comes with additional abilities that expand your play options. While veterans of the original game may find this new system intuitive, there will be more subtle complexities associated with each weapon.
On October 2nd, the game titled Ghost of Yōtei will be available on PS5. The playtime is expected to be equivalent to that of Ghost of Tsushima, although this may vary based on your playing style. It delivers a similar grandeur and expanse, as suggested by its title. For additional information, take a look at our feature article.
