Star Wars Confirms Darth Vader Kept One Secret From Palpatine (Was He Planning to Betray Him?)

In the Star Wars universe, the Sith are known for being incredibly disloyal, even to their own masters. This is a key reason why the Sith’s Rule of Two – a system with only one master and one apprentice – is so unstable. With only two Sith at a time, the apprentice can easily overthrow the master, leading to a never-ending cycle of betrayal and the search for a new apprentice.

Palpatine, arguably the most cunning Sith in Star Wars films and series, perfectly embodies this pattern – he eliminated his own mentor, Darth Plagueis, and then trained a succession of apprentices, culminating in Darth Vader. It’s notable that Vader never openly tried to overthrow Palpatine. However, recent revelations about Vader’s lightsaber hint that he might have been secretly planning to do so for a long time.

Darth Vader Had A Major Lightsaber Secret

A new book, Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith: The Chronicles of Emperor Palpatine, reveals that Darth Vader’s lightsaber was built from the crystal of a weapon once belonging to Jedi Master Kirik Infil’a. According to the book, Vader recovered the crystal after the original weapon was destroyed and used it to create his own, powerfully effective lightsaber. It’s important to note that the book is written as if told by Palpatine himself, so this is his version of events.

It’s already established in Star Wars lore that Darth Vader possessed a lightsaber with two power settings. Since Emperor Palpatine thought Vader’s lightsaber was basic, and this contradicts its complex design, Vader likely kept this feature hidden. This suggests Vader had at least thought about turning against Palpatine, wanting his weapon to be secretly more powerful than his master realized.

The design of Darth Vader’s dual-phase lightsaber is especially noteworthy because it could extend or retract the blade during a fight. This ability would have given him a significant edge, particularly if he could have caught Palpatine off guard with it.

Vader Immediately Wanted To Overthrow Palpatine

Vader keeping a secret from Palpatine makes it likely he was considering a rebellion. However, this isn’t the first hint of his potential betrayal. In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin actually told Padmé he believed he could defeat Palpatine and rule the galaxy with her. While he was misguided, the idea of overthrowing Palpatine was clearly something he’d already thought about.

However, Padmé’s death might have actually stopped a greater tragedy. Anakin believed Padmé and their unborn children had died, and this devastating loss was exactly what Palpatine intended. This explains why Vader seemed defeated until he discovered he had a son. Interestingly, the details surrounding his lightsaber suggest he never completely abandoned the idea of overthrowing Palpatine.
