According to the book, Vader recovered the crystal after the original weapon was destroyed and used it to create his own, powerfully effective lightsaber. It’s important to note that the book is written as if told by Palpatine himself, so this is his version of events.

It’s already established in Star Wars lore that Darth Vader possessed a lightsaber with two power settings. Since Emperor Palpatine thought Vader’s lightsaber was basic, and this contradicts its complex design, Vader likely kept this feature hidden. This suggests Vader had at least thought about turning against Palpatine, wanting his weapon to be secretly more powerful than his master realized.

The design of Darth Vader’s dual-phase lightsaber is especially noteworthy because it could extend or retract the blade during a fight. This ability would have given him a significant edge, particularly if he could have caught Palpatine off guard with it.

Vader Immediately Wanted To Overthrow Palpatine
