Welcome back to the Cannes Film Festival, John Travolta.
John Travolta, known for his role in Saturday Night Fever, showed off a new look at a screening of Karma on May 15th. He wore round glasses and a white beret while attending with his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, who is 26 and the late Kelly Preston’s daughter as well.
Okay, let’s talk style! I was really struck by John’s red carpet look – it was a classic move for him, as he usually doesn’t wear glasses for these events. He went with a sharp, black three-piece suit and a crisp white shirt, which he cleverly echoed in his hat. To finish everything off, he added a white tie, a coordinating pocket square, and some polished black patent leather loafers. It was a really pulled-together and sophisticated look!
Ella chose a black evening gown with velvet accents and paired it with Chopard jewelry and black heels.
John Travolta returned to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time since 2018, when he promoted Gotti and celebrated Grease‘s 40th anniversary. This year, he was there to show his first film as a director, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, and was also honored with a special Palme d’Or award from festival director Thierry Frémaux. John is also a father to Benjamin Travolta, 15, and the late Jett Travolta.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I was there when he said it! It was incredible! He actually said, “This is beyond the Oscar!” Can you believe it?! He was so shocked, he kept saying “Surprise complétement!” – it’s French, I looked it up, and it means ‘completely surprised!’ He just couldn’t believe it was happening, and honestly, neither could I! It was the last thing anyone expected, and seeing his face was just… everything.
In fact, John called the honor a “humbling moment.”
He didn’t think his film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach – based on his 1997 children’s book – would get in, so he was incredibly emotional when Thierry told him it had been accepted, and was even making history as the earliest film ever selected. He said he ‘cried like a baby’ because he couldn’t believe the news.
John likely feels this way because he views the movie—which tells the story of a young boy fascinated by planes who travels to Hollywood with his mother—as his most personal work yet.
He explained that his sister and mother were huge influences on his life, shaping his aspirations and supporting him as he achieved his goals. He feels he’s a combination of both of them.
He explained that this was a small glimpse into his childhood and what life was like for him growing up.
