Horror films have been getting a lot of positive attention from critics recently, and that trend is continuing into 2026. 2025 was a particularly big year for the genre, with the film Sinners receiving a remarkable 18 Oscar nominations, even competing for Best Picture. Weapons also did very well, earning Amy Madigan an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Aunt Gladys. So far in 2026, we’ve already seen new installments in the Scream series, a Mummy movie reminiscent of Evil Dead, and the wildly unconventional Bride! Despite all the buzz, only two horror films have achieved a perfect 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and both are relatively obscure titles.
Gillian Anderson’s new horror film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, received perfect reviews after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, earning a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s only the second horror movie of 2026 to achieve this, joining Never After Dark with a perfect rating.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma Shines at Cannes
Jane Schoenbrun’s new film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13th. It currently boasts a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with 36 reviews. The movie centers around a struggling horror franchise, Camp Miasma, which is losing popularity. When a new director (Hannah Einbinder from Hacks) attempts to revive it, she seeks out the original star (Anderson), and the two become entangled in a dark and intense world of passion, dread, and madness.
Critics are raving about the new show. TIME Magazine calls the lead actress’s performance ‘sublime’ and praises the chemistry with her co-star. The Hollywood Reporter describes the show as ‘heady and strange,’ though perhaps not as emotionally powerful as TV Glow, but still ‘captivating’ in its honesty and complexity. Time Out highlights the show as a clever horror-comedy that satirizes the entertainment industry, but also suggests it explores themes of sexual awakening on a deeper level.
Only one other film has achieved a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes: Never After Dark, which premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival on March 13th. However, it’s based on only 20 reviews, while Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has significantly more. The film centers around a psychic who guides lost spirits to the afterlife, but she encounters a dangerous force and hidden truths while investigating a secluded house.
As a horror fan, I was really intrigued by ‘Never After Dark,’ and critics seem to agree it’s something special. Brian Tallerico over at RogerEbert.com highlighted the lead performance by Hoshi as a key reason the film works, but also praised the overall craftsmanship – it’s a genuinely well-made horror movie. And Bloody Disgusting’s reviewer pointed out that writer/director Dave Boyle does a fantastic job blending traditional ghost story elements with genuinely creepy human villains, giving a familiar haunted house setup a really fresh, supernatural spin.
Good news for movie fans – you’ll be able to see these films and decide what you think later this year! Never After Dark comes to US theaters on September 25th, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma will have a limited release on August 7th.
