This week’s Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream generated a lot of excitement for fans of the long-running Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. With the fiftieth anniversary approaching, a new anime series based on Gundam Wing was revealed, along with a prequel film to the popular movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. Perhaps most surprisingly, a complete remaster of the original Gundam series – the story of Amuro and Char – is also in development, though fans will have to wait a while to experience this updated version of the classic.
Bandai Namco recently announced a remastered version of the original Gundam series during a livestream. However, fans will have to wait until 2029 to play it. According to the official Gundam website, the remaster is being developed to celebrate the series’ 50th anniversary and allow a new generation of fans to experience where it all began – Mobile Suit Gundam. While it’s currently unknown if the remaster will be a complete TV series or a movie, this isn’t the first time the classic Gundam universe has been revisited. You can watch the announcement livestream here.
The Gundam Story That Started It All
The original Gundam series premiered in the 1970s, but the popular mech franchise continues to find new ways to stay relevant. A recent highlight was the release of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, the second film in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash trilogy. This movie, now showing in North American theaters, revisits the story of Noa Hathaway, a character connected to the legacies of Amuro and Char. While the final film in the trilogy doesn’t have a release date yet, focusing on Hathaway’s story has proven successful for the franchise.
Beyond the story of Hathaway, the original Gundam universe explored a different path with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Instead of continuing the story after Noa Hathaway, this series presented an alternate reality where the Principality of Zeon won the war against the Earth Federation. Though drastically different from the main timeline familiar to many fans, it still built a believable world with interesting uses for the classic mobile suits. While some Gundam series branch out, the franchise consistently returns to the central conflict between the Earth Federation and Zeon.
