Looking back at TV shows from the 2000s can be hit or miss, even if it’s a series you used to love. I recently rewatched one of my favorites and was surprisingly frustrated by something. Even 17 years later, FlashForward, a short-lived ABC show that was cancelled after just one season, still feels engaging. While the series, based on the 1999 novel by Robert J. Sawyer, worked well during its initial run, it never got the chance to finish its story.

The sci-fi thriller FlashForward centered around a worldwide blackout that briefly showed everyone a glimpse of their life six months in the future. Following the success of Lost in the 2000s, many hoped FlashForward would be the next big mystery show, offering a more direct take on time travel. It was an ambitious series with a talented cast and a seemingly well-planned storyline. However, FlashForward ultimately became a lesson in what not to do, failing to live up to its initial promise.

Rewatching FlashForward highlights how challenging it is for network television to take big risks these days, reminding us of a time when ambitious storytelling felt more possible. However, revisiting the show is also disappointing, as it represents a significant missed opportunity and remains a frustrating example of what could have been.

Flashforward Is A Great One-Season Binge Spoiled By The Lack Of A Follow-Up

Even years later, FlashForward remains a compelling sci-fi series, particularly considering it followed the hugely popular Lost. Though it didn’t immediately reach the same heights as Lost, FlashForward is an enjoyable show built around a captivating idea: almost everyone on Earth briefly sees a vision of their life six months in the future. The series skillfully balances the personal struggles of individual characters with the overarching mystery of what caused these visions.

Despite being released in the 2000s, FlashForward feels surprisingly modern and easy to binge-watch, avoiding many of the common issues with shows from that era. However, the series unfortunately ends without resolving its main mysteries. Although its future was uncertain heading into the 2010 season, FlashForward concluded on a major cliffhanger, and its cancellation left the story completely unfinished. While enjoyable, FlashForward is ultimately a frustrating experience because of its unresolved plotlines.

Flashforward Had The Potential To Be TV’s ‘New Lost’

As a huge sci-fi fan, I remember when FlashForward and Lost were both on. Even though they weren’t exactly the same type of show, they both had that big, central mystery that really grabbed people, so the media kept comparing them. Lost especially became a cultural phenomenon – everyone was talking about it! It was one of those shows you had to watch as soon as it aired. Sure, it had its confusing moments, and sometimes frustrated both viewers and critics, but the amazing thing about Lost was that it actually got to finish its story and build out its mythology over its entire run.

Despite having the potential to be a standout sci-fi show on network television, FlashForward was unfortunately canceled. Like other successful shows with a broad scope and a central mystery, it had everything needed to become a major hit. While it did gain a dedicated following, the first season wasn’t popular enough to secure a renewal from ABC. It’s not that FlashForward was a bad show, but rather its unfinished story that’s so disappointing. It remains a creatively interesting series that I’ll always wish had a proper conclusion.
