The Godfather Is Officially Getting a New Story in 2027, And It Breaks a 58-Year-Old Trend

As a longtime fan of The Godfather, I’m thrilled to share some fantastic news! It’s been a while since we’ve had new material from the Corleone family, but Random House just announced they’ve acquired a brand new novel, authorized by the estate of Mario Puzo, the original author. Even better? It’s being penned by bestselling author Adriana Trigiani, known for The View from Lake Como. We’re looking at a 2027 release, which feels like a long wait, but trust me, a new chapter in this iconic crime saga is absolutely worth it. It’s a real win for fans of the movies and the books alike!

The next book in the series will be unique – it will focus on a female character, a departure from previous installments. Titled Connie, the novel tells the story of Connie Corleone, Michael Corleone’s sister, as seen in The Godfather films. This book is one of three authorized by the Puzo estate, and it’s notable for being both told from a woman’s perspective and written by a female author.

Connie Brings Something New and Much Needed to the Table

In a recent announcement, author A.N. Trigiani described her new novel focusing on Connie Corleone as a story about a woman fighting to define herself despite societal expectations. She suggests, much like people underestimated Vito and Michael Corleone, underestimating Connie would be a mistake. The book series is owned by Paramount Pictures, which also holds the film rights – good news for movie fans. However, there’s been a long-standing, complicated relationship between Paramount and the Puzo estate regarding control of the Corleone family characters. After legal disputes, they reached an agreement: the estate can continue publishing books, while Paramount retains the rights to adapt future stories into films.

Fans can thank Substack for how Adriana Trigiani became involved in the project. The popular author wrote an article discussing the lack of attention given to the women in the Corleone family, which caught the attention of the Puzo estate. According to Mario Puzo’s son, Anthony, they were searching for a writer to offer a fresh perspective. He revealed that Vito Corleone – famously portrayed by Brando and De Niro – was actually inspired by his grandmother. They discussed the powerful, yet often unseen, role women played in both families, and were particularly impressed with Adriana’s ideas for Connie’s story. Anthony expressed his enthusiasm about having her join the project.
