Platinum Trophy #26: Arrog
Date Earned: 4th February 2021
Dopamine Index:
This is likely the most frequently earned platinum Trophy in my collection. Checking my console, I found that over 80% of players who have played Arrog have unlocked the platinum Trophy.
You might be wondering, what exactly is Arrog? To be honest, I’d completely forgotten about it myself until I started writing this next installment of Going Platinum.
Arrog is a quick game, typically beatable in around 30 minutes, and you can likely earn all of its trophies during a single playthrough.
Honestly, it kind of feels like one of those super easy games where getting the platinum trophy is almost too simple. It seems designed just to give dedicated trophy hunters like me a quick and easy win, which is a little disappointing, if I’m being real.
Arrog isn’t like other easy platinum games. While it is simple to get the trophy, it at least attempts to be artistic while doing so.
I suddenly remembered this game, but I couldn’t recall much about it except that it was in black and white. For the first time in my ‘Going Platinum’ series, I decided to replay the entire game to refresh my memory.
This game is a classic point-and-click adventure, but the puzzles are very simple and mainly serve to move the story forward.
Although there isn’t much actual game play, Arrog shines because of how it’s presented. Its charming, hand-drawn art style works well with the game’s immersive sound design.
Honestly, this game really got to me. It’s a surprisingly deep experience, even though there’s hardly any talking or text. It feels like you’re inside the final moments and memories of someone who’s passing away. It sounds super sad, and it is a little bit, but Arrog’s weird and wonderful adventure actually finishes on a really uplifting note, which I didn’t expect!
From what I understand, the game’s depiction of death is inspired by Peruvian culture. So, while you’re earning those Trophies, you’re also learning something meaningful and unique.
This Going Platinum article reminded me of Arrog, a game that isn’t amazing, but it’s unique in how much story it packs into a short, thirty-minute experience.
Cheers, Arrog.
