Absolute Batman’s Creator Made an Attack on Titan Sequel (And You Probably Haven’t Read It)

Currently, one of the most popular comic books is Absolute Batman, a DC series that offers a fresh and surprising take on the Batman mythos and Gotham City. Writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta are the creative team behind this exciting new line of comics, which has quickly become more popular than the main DC Universe. Fans are eager to see which familiar characters will reappear. Interestingly, before this, Snyder had also pitched a reimagined version of Attack on Titan that dramatically altered that universe as well.

This special story originally appeared in a 2016 Attack on Titan anthology, which brought together several well-known comic book creators to expand on Hajime Isayama’s world. Artists and writers like Evan Dorkin, Sam Humphries, Gail Simone, and others didn’t just fill in gaps in the existing story; they created entirely new versions of the Attack on Titan universe. This particular short story was a collaboration between Scott Snyder and Ray Fawkes, with art by Rafael Albuquerque – the three had previously worked together on the horror comic American Vampire. Here, Snyder returns to his horror background, but this time within the setting of Attack on Titan.

You won’t believe the direction this story took! Instead of sticking with Eren, Marley, and Paradis, Scott Snyder and Ray Fawkes completely shifted gears and set the story in San Francisco, 2030. It’s a really bleak future, honestly – the world seems to be crumbling. We follow Dr. Price and his assistant as they make this desperate, almost hopeless, attempt to save everyone. But instead of some crazy scientific experiment, Dr. Price thinks the answer to peace lies with the whales! He’s discovered movement deep under the ocean, and believes they’re returning after being thought extinct in this new world. It’s a fascinating twist!

Price and his team flew by helicopter, eager to film the whales’ return and share the footage with a world devastated by war. However, the pilot was reluctant to fly, fearing the chaos on the ground. A disagreement onboard led to even worse news: the tremors in the ocean weren’t caused by whales, but by colossal, skinless Titans rising from the depths. This shocking reveal, presented in the story’s final scene, demonstrates how these giant creatures could exist in a completely different world than the anime they’re known from.

Is This Really An Attack on Titan Sequel?

It’s debatable whether the story in Snyder and Fawkes’ Attack on Titan happens in a separate world or the main Attack on Titan universe. The series finale showed that even after losing most of humanity and Eren Jaeger’s death, war felt unavoidable for mankind. The very last scene depicts someone discovering Eren’s grave, suggesting the cycle of Titans may begin anew.

The last scene doesn’t necessarily prove this was the first time the Titans reappeared after Eren’s death. The imagery suggests a cycle of destruction will continue, with future cities rising and falling to war, much like those we know today. Could Attack on Titan actually be a story set before our present world? It’s a possibility, and Zack Snyder’s new interpretation could fit into the established story, though it’s doubtful the original creator, Hajime Isayama, will ever officially confirm this connection.
