Project Hail Mary is officially passing Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus at the box office.
The new sci-fi movie, based on Andy Weir’s book, has quickly become a major hit this year, breaking box office records and earning a remarkable $80 million during its opening weekend – the biggest debut ever for a film on Amazon. The movie was so well-received by audiences that the studio decided to keep it in theaters longer.
Even after almost two months in cinemas, Project Hail Mary continues to perform well at the box office. Deadline reports the 2026 film has now earned over $330.95 million in the US and Canada, exceeding the $330 million total of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
It’s amazing to see how far Project Hail Mary has come! Just eight weeks ago, it was behind the Oppenheimer biopic in the box office numbers. Oppenheimer had a fantastic opening weekend – the second best for a non-franchise movie, bringing in $82 million domestically. Now, Project Hail Mary has earned over $660 million worldwide, which is incredible, though it looks like Oppenheimer‘s total of $975 million will remain higher.
With Project Hail Mary now available for streaming, its run in theaters is winding down. The sci-fi film has proven to be a hit, exceeding its $500 million break-even point despite a $200 million budget. It’s also become Andy Weir’s most successful movie, surpassing the box office numbers of The Martian both in the US and internationally.
The book’s success is largely due to how well it was received. Project Hail Mary received excellent reviews from both critics and readers, who particularly loved Ryan Gosling’s performance, the stunning visuals of space, and the touching story of a unique friendship between a human and an alien named Rocky.
Thanks to positive reviews and buzz on social media, the movie’s box office numbers and theater attendance have increased. Currently, Project Hail Mary has a 94% critic rating and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now that the movie has been out for two months, ticket sales are decreasing as new films are released in theaters. It’s also expected to be available on Prime Video soon, though Amazon hasn’t announced a specific date yet. While the movie could still earn a bit more at the box office and potentially break a few more records, it’s unlikely to reach $700 million in total.
Despite its theatrical run winding down, Project Hail Mary is still generating buzz, with discussions likely to continue about its chances at awards, especially for its technical achievements. Author Andy Weir has also hinted at a possible sequel, telling ScreenRant he has some initial ideas but wants to ensure any follow-up is truly worthwhile. He said, “Hopefully, in time, I’ve got bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels, but not enough to run with. If I’m going to sequel it, I want it to be good.”
Meanwhile, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their directing work, are also working on an adaptation of Artemis. Despite being in development for eight years, they confirmed the movie was still on track, explaining they’d found a way to realistically portray the moon’s gravity without an enormous budget – reportedly, avoiding a billion-dollar cost.
This science fiction film centers on Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who is sent into space on a desperate mission to save Earth. A mysterious microorganism is causing the Sun to fade, and it’s up to him to find a solution. During his travels, he meets and teams up with an alien on a similar quest. The movie also stars Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce, and the script was written by Drew Goddard.
Project Hail Mary is playing in theaters and is available for video-on-demand.
