Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were surprised earlier this year when Hulu canceled its planned reboot, which had been in development for two years. The project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, had successfully brought star Sarah Michelle Gellar back to her famous role after more than 20 years. With Gellar on board, the popularity of reboots at the time, and a pilot episode directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao already filmed, the show seemed like a guaranteed success for the streaming service, making the cancellation a complete shock.
The recent cancellation of Buffy might come as a surprise, but it’s not the first time a show from the Buffy universe has been cut short. Back in the 2000s, plans for a sixth season of Angel fell through, leaving the show with an unresolved cliffhanger. More recently, before New Sunnydale was announced, some of the original Buffy cast reunited for Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, an audio drama from Audible.
The audio drama continued the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer over ten years after the original series ended, introducing a new Slayer named Indira as she learned to control her powers and navigate her life. She sought guidance from Spike, but things got complicated when a Cordelia Chase from an alternate reality appeared. This Cordelia revealed a major threat to her world – a world where she was the Slayer, Buffy Summers never existed, and the villain was none other than Drusilla. The series brought back familiar faces like Amber Benson (Tara Maclay), who also helped write the story, along with Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), James Marsters (Spike), Anthony Head (Rupert Giles), and Emma Caulfield (Anya Jenkins).
Slayers Deserves To Continue If Buffy The Vampire Slayer Isn’t Getting A New TV Show

While not flawless, with a plot that occasionally felt like a fan-made story and a strong leaning on familiar moments, Slayers was genuinely enjoyable. It was fantastic to hear so many original cast members return after two decades, and they even added some interesting new layers to their characters. Seeing Carpenter reprise her role as Cordelia, especially considering how her story ended on Angel, was a particularly satisfying way for her to revisit the character. It didn’t offer anything revolutionary, but much like the Buffy novels and comics, it was a welcome return to that universe and a chance to reconnect with beloved characters.
Season 2 ended with a thrilling cliffhanger, setting up a lot of potential for future storylines. Without giving away too much for those who haven’t seen it (and it’s definitely worth watching!), the season revealed some surprising twists about key characters like Spike and Drusilla, and a few others who become more important as the series goes on.
Man, I was really bummed when Disney cancelled Slayers earlier this year, in 2024. It was doing so well! Christopher Golden, who’s a fantastic writer and did a ton of Buffy comics and novels, shared that they weren’t even given a reason. He said Disney just wouldn’t let Audible make any more seasons of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which is a real shame.
A year after its initial announcement, Hulu (owned by Disney) confirmed they were developing a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. While it’s not certain, the cancellation of Slayers might be connected, as Disney likely didn’t want two similar shows airing at the same time, especially with some actors potentially involved in both projects, including the planned New Sunnydale.
Now that there are no definite plans for more Buffy on television, it’s time to give Season 2 of Slayers a chance. While it’s not perfect, the show clearly respects and builds upon the original Buffy series, offering a fun way to expand the Buffyverse – something the franchise and its fans both deserve.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story Season 1 is available on Audible.
