Following the huge popularity of ‘Fountain of Youth’ on streaming platforms, director Guy Ritchie has explained why the film wasn’t shown in cinemas.
The action movie premiered on Apple TV on May 23, 2025, and has remained a popular choice ever since. For the past year, it’s consistently been among the top 10 most-watched films on the streaming service, and it stayed in the top 10 in the U.S. for over 200 days straight.
Taking cues from the adventure films like Indiana Jones, Fountain of Youth follows siblings Luke (John Krasinski) and Charlotte Purdue (Natalie Portman) on a thrilling worldwide search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. The film also stars Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, and Stanley Tucci.
Director Guy Ritchie recently spoke with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant about his latest film. He discussed whether he specifically requested a theatrical release, considering his previous movie, Fountain of Youth, went straight to streaming. Ritchie explained that the film industry has evolved, and both movie theaters and streaming have their advantages. He feels the main draw of seeing a film in theaters is the shared experience with an audience. You can find his full comments below.
Things are different now, both in the film industry and for audiences. Honestly, I don’t have a strong opinion either way, except that films are meant to be seen in theaters. The impact of a 40-foot screen is just not the same as watching on a small phone. Plus, experiencing a movie with an audience of hundreds is completely different than watching it by yourself – the shared reaction adds a lot to the experience.
Both watching movies in theaters and creating films for smaller screens have their benefits. Ultimately, though, the true essence of cinema lies in the shared experience of going to a movie theater. Luckily, there’s space for both ways of enjoying and making films.
Guy Ritchie’s films, ranging from Fountain of Youth to In the Grey, have successfully utilized both streaming and traditional movie theaters, showing he understands the advantages of both. This is notable considering his extensive background directing films released in cinemas, including titles like Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, RocknRolla, the Sherlock Holmes films, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Disney’s Aladdin, and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Guy Ritchie has expanded into television, creating and producing shows for major streaming platforms. These include The Gentlemen (a continuation of his 2019 film) on Netflix, MobLand on Paramount+, and Young Sherlock on Prime Video. All three series have proven popular and have been picked up for second seasons.
It’s common for movies in theaters to be popular with audiences even if critics don’t like them, and the same is true for films released on streaming services. Guy Ritchie’s 2025 movie has done very well on its streaming platform, despite mostly negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 35% rating from critics and a 38% audience score.
Director Guy Ritchie isn’t restricting actors to either film or streaming projects. For instance, actor Edgar Ramírez appears in both the Apple TV+ series Fountain of Youth and the films In the Grey and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. In the Grey also brings Ritchie, Ramírez, and Henry Cavill—another frequent Ritchie collaborator—together again, alongside a cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rosamund Pike, Kristofer Hivju, Fisher Stevens, and Carlos Bardem.
In the Grey is now playing in theaters.
