I just finished watching Maul: Shadow Lord, and it’s quickly become one of the best new Star Wars shows Disney has produced. Since buying Lucasfilm, Disney’s Star Wars output has been very mixed, with some excellent shows like Andor, hidden gems like Skeleton Crew, outright failures like The Acolyte, and major letdowns like The Book of Boba Fett.
This new series featuring Maul isn’t just a quick attempt to make money; it delivers the intense action and emotional depth of The Clone Wars. It also powerfully portrays the grim realities of life under the Empire, much like Andor. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see Sam Witwer shine in his famous role. The show boasts a unique, visually striking animation style—similar to Spider-Verse—making it a captivating watch.
A standout feature of Maul: Shadow Lord is its incredible voice acting. Sam Witwer delivers a compelling and surprisingly human performance as Maul, and he’s supported by a fantastic cast. Chris Diamantopoulos, known for Silicon Valley, is hilarious as a crime boss, while Dennis Haysbert brings a touching performance as a Jedi Master on the run. Richard Ayoade adds his signature dry wit as a police droid, but Gideon Adlon truly shines as a Twi’lek Jedi – it’s clear she gets her voice acting talent from her mother.
Wagner Moura, recently nominated for Best Actor, is the standout performer in Maul: Shadow Lord. However, there’s a sense of déjà vu surrounding his Star Wars character.
Maul: Shadow Lord’s Lawson Has The Same Dramatic Conflict As Armando In The Secret Agent
Andy Moura plays Brander Lawson, a detective working on the planet Janix, and his character provides a unique viewpoint on the growing threat of the Empire. Lawson is part of the local police force, which operates independently from the Empire, creating conflict and a difficult moral dilemma when Imperial troops arrive and begin their occupation. Within this visually stunning animated space opera, Moura delivers a realistic and relatable performance as an honest officer forced to answer to corrupt leaders. The character resonated with Moura, sharing similar motivations to the role that recently earned him his first Oscar nomination.
This year, Wagner Moura received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s critically acclaimed thriller, The Secret Agent. He played Armando, a researcher fleeing the oppressive Brazilian military dictatorship of the 1970s. Like his character in Maul: Shadow Lord, Armando faces a difficult dilemma: balancing his duties as a father with his fight against a brutal, authoritarian government. Both roles showcase Moura playing a character trapped between impossible choices.
Armando is fighting against the oppressive regime, which is the right thing to do, but it endangers his son. Lawson feels the same way about the Empire – he despises it, but his biggest concern is his child’s safety. Lawson is similar to Armando, though perhaps not as devoted a parent.
Wagner Moura Has Quietly Established Himself As One Of The World’s Best Actors
I’ve been a huge fan of Wagner Moura for years, and it’s amazing to see how consistently great he’s been. He was a big star in Brazil with the Elite Squad films, and then started getting noticed internationally when he was in Elysium with Matt Damon. But for me, he really blew up after playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos – that role was incredible! Since then, he’s been getting Oscar nominations and landing leading roles in some huge movies. It’s been awesome to watch his career take off.
Wagner Moura recently starred in Alex Garland’s film Civil War and showcased his voice acting talents in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. His work in Maul: Shadow Lord continues a pattern of strong performances throughout his career.
