7 MCU Deleted Scenes We Wish Were Canon

Unlike some other film franchises, Marvel movies don’t have extended “director’s cuts.” However, deleted scenes often appear on Blu-ray and DVD releases, giving fans a look at footage that didn’t make the final cut. This has been a consistent practice throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sometimes, directors agree these scenes aren’t necessary for the story. But other times, Marvel executives make the decision to cut scenes, or they’re removed simply to shorten the runtime, even if they could have improved an already strong film.

From a moment that could have closely explored the famous “Demon in a Battle” comic book arc to one that likely would have been a huge merchandising success, here are seven scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans wish hadn’t been removed from the official storyline.

7) Smart Hulk Busts Out of Hulkbuster Suit

As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited to see Hulk in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, but I was really thrown when the movie actually came out. Almost all of his footage from the trailers was cut! We see him get absolutely pummeled by Thanos at the beginning, and after that… pretty much nothing. He mostly just stayed inside Banner’s head, refusing to come out and fight. It was so strange! Banner ended up having to suit up in the Hulkbuster armor to help with the battle instead. It felt like a totally different Hulk than we’d seen before.

A deleted scene from Avengers: Infinity War showed Hulk unexpectedly emerging from the Hulkbuster armor during the Battle of Wakanda. This was originally how the filmmakers introduced Smart Hulk – the version where Banner has more control. While exciting, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely removed the scene because they wanted the heroes to hit rock bottom. Many fans feel this moment, showing Hulk’s return with Banner in control, would have made his reappearance in Avengers: Endgame even more surprising.

6) Tony Stark Drunk on the Plane

While still a popular film, Iron Man 2 received some of the weakest reviews of any early Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The story centered on Tony Stark facing off against a competing arms manufacturer, Justin Hammer, and the villain Whiplash. The film culminated in a battle between Iron Man, War Machine, and AI-controlled suits of armor, along with Whiplash. Beyond the action, the movie also explored Stark’s struggle with alcoholism, a storyline inspired by the famous “Demon in a Bottle” comic book arc.

As a huge fan, I always appreciated the scene where a clearly struggling, intoxicated Tony Stark stumbles around in the Iron Man suit, and Rhodey finally calls him out. But I recently learned about a scene that didn’t make the final cut, and I wish it had! It showed Tony and Pepper on a jet, and he was really sick from the palladium poisoning. It would have been a powerful moment to really show how much he was spiraling out of control, but Jon Favreau decided to cut it, apparently to keep the movie moving at a faster pace. I think it would have added a lot of depth to his character.

5) Thanos Reminds Gamora of Their Past

Thanos and Gamora had a deeply troubled connection. He found her as a child on her home planet, but also caused the deaths of most of her people. Gamora eventually turned against Thanos, though she constantly struggled with her feelings and loyalty. A scene cut from the movie Avengers: Infinity War would have further complicated their already strained relationship.

A deleted scene called “A Father’s Choice” reveals Gamora deceiving Thanos about the Soul Stone’s location. In response, Thanos uses the Reality Stone to show Gamora a fabricated memory of her childhood. This vision depicts a young Gamora, dressed in armor resembling his own, happily assisting him – suggesting she willingly sought his approval. However, Gamora insists this is a false portrayal, maintaining she was a captive. The scene highlights the complex and troubled dynamic between Thanos and his adopted daughter.

4) Tony Stark Forgives Bucky

The central conflict of Captain America: Civil War revolved around a disagreement between Captain America and Iron Man regarding the Sokovia Accords, which led to a full-blown battle. A separate, but connected, struggle involved Captain America’s desperate attempt to protect his friend Bucky. This was especially critical after Iron Man discovered Bucky had killed Tony Stark’s parents, Howard and Maria, while under Hydra’s mind control. Despite knowing Bucky wasn’t responsible for his actions, Iron Man tried to kill him, forcing Captain America to intervene and defend his friend.

A scene cut from Avengers: Endgame should have been included. It happened during the final battle when Doctor Strange used the Mirror Dimension to delay Thanos. In that moment, Bucky saved Iron Man, and Iron Man, in turn, forgave Bucky for his past actions regarding his family. This scene would have nicely resolved the conflict from Captain America: Civil War.

3) Loki’s Coronation

A deleted scene from Thor: The Dark World really should have stayed in the movie. It would have given Loki a crucial moment that explains a lot about his character arc throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The scene depicted his grand coronation in Asgard. The first Thor film established Loki as Odin’s overlooked son, someone ambitious who constantly felt inadequate and simply craved acceptance – and this scene would have finally given him that.

Loki was hailed as the new king by a joyful crowd, including Sif, Fandral, and Volstagg. He even adopted Thor’s look, wearing a red cape and wielding Mjolnir, clearly showing his desire to be like his brother – a desire he never fulfilled. This moment, sadly, was just a fantasy, broken by Frigga, and it perfectly revealed Loki’s deepest wishes and dreams. It was a crucial scene for understanding Loki’s character and deserved to be included in the final cut, not left on the cutting room floor.

2) Thor Is Possessed at the Norm Cave

Avengers: Age of Ultron was packed with content, and director Joss Whedon was asked to trim it down. One casualty of these cuts was a scene where Thor visited the Norn Cave. The film aimed to give each Avenger a moment of personal growth – Captain America reflected on his past romance with Peggy Carter, and Iron Man confronted his trauma and fear of failure. Thor, in a deleted scene, experienced a vision of Ragnarok and was briefly controlled by the Norn.

A deleted scene featured the Norn communicating through Thor to Selvig, explaining the six Infinity Stones – including the one Ultron later used. While a strong scene, test audiences didn’t respond positively to it, according to Whedon. It would have clarified Thor’s actions and foreshadowed future events, but ultimately, its removal left Thor feeling less central to the plot during a crucial moment – a point where he should have been a key player.

1) Tony Stark Sees Morgan in Soul World

The end of Avengers: Endgame was incredibly emotional, starting with Tony Stark’s death and Pepper Potts’ heartfelt farewell. Everyone was deeply saddened, particularly Peter Parker, and the film concluded with Tony’s funeral. However, a deleted scene featuring a final goodbye from Tony to his fans—who had followed his journey for ten years—would have been a fitting addition to the movie.

This cut scene shows Tony Stark dying and entering the orange world of the Soul Stone. There, he encounters a young Morgan Stark (played by Katherine Langford), his daughter. She assures him she had a happy childhood and expresses her love and pride. She then repeats their special phrase, “I love you 3000,” before the scene concludes, giving Tony a peaceful moment as he passes away. Including this scene would have provided a final, heartfelt goodbye to the beloved hero.
