Even after Stan Lee’s death in 2018, his imaginative work continues to inspire. A brand new superhero series, based on an idea he originally created, has finally premiered after a challenging development process.
All eight episodes of the South Korean comedy series, The WONDERfools, are now available on Netflix. The show started as an idea from Lee for a story called The B-Team, which focused on a battle between lesser-known superheroes and the scientist who made them. Development began in 2018 with Lee’s production company, POW! Entertainment, but after several years, a new company, Nagmancrew, took over in 2024 and gave the series its current title.
The WONDERfools Finally Starts Streaming
Even though the show evolved from its original concept as The B-Team to The WONDERfools, it still focuses on a group of superheroes with problems. Set in 1999, these heroes are endangered by the person who gave them their powers. They haven’t mastered their abilities yet, so their powers often cause unexpected and chaotic results. They’re far from a polished superhero team like the Avengers or Justice League, but the “WONDERfools” are the only ones who can stop their creator’s dangerous plan to bring about the apocalypse.
Leading up to the year 2000, the Korean town of Haeseong is shaken by strange disappearances and the rise of a disturbing new church – a reminder of past traumas. While the town is gripped by fear, three unlikely friends are focused on their own lives, until they suddenly realize they’re the only ones who can save everyone.
The Series Follows a Unique Cast of Characters
The series WONDERfools features Park Eun-bin as Eun Chae-ni, alongside Cha Eun-woo as Lee Un-jeong, a civil servant with telekinetic powers. The cast also includes Choi Dae-hoon as Son Gyeong-hun, who can create super-strength glue when he lies; Im Seong-jae as Kang Ro-bin, a strong kitchen worker activated by swearing; Kim Hae-sook as Kim Jeon-bok, Chae-ni’s grandmother and the group’s mentor; and Son Hyun-joo as Ha Won-do, the scientist responsible for giving the group their powers through experimentation.
The series is receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Audiences love it, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although critics’ scores aren’t available yet due to a limited number of reviews. It’s also proving popular with viewers, currently ranking as one of Netflix’s top 10 shows globally.
The WONDERfools is streaming on Netflix.
