Forgotten Fantasy With 92% RT Score Is Heroes Meets Euphoria

Let me tell you about a show you probably haven’t heard of, but seriously need to. It’s a fantastic fantasy superhero drama that’s been hiding in plain sight, and it’s currently sitting at a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. What really struck me is how brilliantly it combines the compelling storytelling of early Heroes with the raw, visually striking style of Euphoria. We’re so used to DC and Marvel dominating the superhero landscape, and they are great, but this show proves there’s incredible superhero content being made completely outside of those big franchises. It’s a refreshing reminder that great stories can come from anywhere.

Originally an independent comic from Image Comics, The Walking Dead became a global hit after being adapted for television. Similarly, The Boys from Prime Video has gained a huge following and now includes the spinoff series Gen V. Invincible has been praised by critics and is very popular with viewers. And on Netflix, The Umbrella Academy filled a void after the conclusion of the Defenders Saga.

Before superhero shows became hugely popular, Heroes arrived on the scene, but it unfortunately premiered at the wrong moment. It probably would have been a massive hit if it were released now. However, Heroes wasn’t the only fantastic, overlooked superhero series. The British show Misfits offers everything fans loved about Heroes, but with the added depth of flawed characters and realistic social commentary, similar to Euphoria.

Misfits Shares The Best Elements Of Heroes & Euphoria

If you enjoyed Euphoria and Heroes, you’ll likely love Misfits. While those two shows seem quite different, Misfits shares elements of both. Like Euphoria, it’s a character-focused drama about troubled teenagers navigating difficult issues like social acceptance, class, crime, and identity. The show also explores themes of trauma, substance abuse, and mental health, and features complex, often chaotic relationships between its main characters.

Both Heroes and Misfits are TV shows about regular people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. Most of the characters aren’t eager to be heroes, though a few embrace it. A significant part of each show explores how these powers disrupt and complicate their normal lives.

While Misfits shares some similarities with shows like Heroes and Euphoria, it stands apart as a darkly comedic and often outrageous series. Unlike Heroes, which focuses on heroic characters saving the world, Misfits centers on flawed, self-centered individuals primarily concerned with their own survival. The show is also less grounded in reality than Euphoria, despite addressing issues like class and the struggles of young people. Let’s be honest, getting superpowers from a lightning strike is a bit far-fetched!

Misfits Received A Proper Ending, Unlike Heroes

Both Heroes and Euphoria have flaws. While the first two seasons of Euphoria are excellent, the show declines in quality with season 3. This season features a five-year time jump that significantly alters the characters and shifts the focus from realistic teenage issues to sensationalism, sacrificing emotional resonance.

The show Heroes didn’t deliver either. The initial series was cut short without a satisfying conclusion. It ran for four seasons, then returned for one more before being canceled again – and neither the original run nor the revival provided a real ending, instead leaving viewers with a cliffhanger. Now, Heroes: Eclipse is attempting to continue the story, but there’s no assurance it will be well-received or even get the chance to finish properly.

While the characters and direction of Misfits evolved over time with some favorites departing, it managed to maintain a consistent storyline, unlike Euphoria. Importantly, Misfits was allowed to finish its story, which is rare for many excellent shows that get cut short. Of course, like with any popular series, not everyone loved the ending, but I thought it was well done. Ultimately, Misfits at least provided a satisfying conclusion, something Heroes never achieved.
