I Just Rewatched All 3 Seasons Of The Mandalorian: Here Are The Top 15 Best Episodes

With just a few days to go, theaters will soon be showing The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars film since 2019’s Rise of Skywalker. The movie continues the story of Din Djarina (played by Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, picking up shortly after the events of season 3 of The Mandalorian on Disney+.

I recently rewatched all three seasons of The Mandalorian and the key episodes with Din Djarin and Grogu from The Book of Boba Fett. I wanted to determine which episodes were the best and most important for understanding their overall story in the Star Wars universe.

With a few episodes from The Book of Boba Fett included, here are 15 of the most essential The Mandalorian episodes, particularly as we get ready for The Mandalorian & Grogu to premiere later this week.

Chapter 1: The Mandalorian

The first episode of The Mandalorian is still considered one of the best Star Wars premieres ever, as it marked the beginning of the first live-action series in the franchise. It was in this episode that viewers first met Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, a brand new bounty hunter from the Star Wars universe who works in the Outer Rim.

The series introduced Grogu, a powerful and Force-sensitive character initially known to fans as “Baby Yoda” due to his resemblance to the species of Jedi Master Yoda. Grogu quickly became a popular sensation online and in wider culture.

Chapter 3: The Sin

This chapter solidifies Din Djarin’s dedication to protecting Grogu and raising him, as he feels guilty about initially handing the child over to the Empire. He successfully rescues Grogu with help from other Mandalorians, a visually stunning moment that many longtime Star Wars fans have waited years to see. The episode is particularly important because it highlights Din Djarin’s strong sense of right and wrong, even though he works as a bounty hunter.

Chapter 8: Redemption

Wow, the season 1 finale of The Mandalorian really blew me away! It wasn’t just a great ending to the first season, it made me realize this show is going to be something huge. Seeing Din Djarin finally protect Grogu from Moff Gideon and the remnants of the Empire on Nevarro was so satisfying. But then, the reveal that Gideon had the Darksaber – that ancient weapon from The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels – completely changed everything! It’s clear Din and Grogu’s journey is just getting started, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Chapter 9: The Marshal

The second season of The Mandalorian kicked off with a thrilling start, raising the stakes and showcasing stunning visual effects. The episode featured Din Djarin helping the people of Mos Pelgo on Tatooine fight a giant krayt dragon. He forged an unlikely alliance between the town’s settlers and a local tribe of Tusken Raiders, who also wanted the dragon destroyed. Djarin ultimately killed the creature in exchange for Boba Fett’s damaged armor, which the town marshal had obtained from Jawas.

This episode also officially established that Boba Fett survived, even though he seemingly died in Return of the Jedi after falling into the sarlacc pit on Carkoon. Later episodes of The Mandalorian season 2 showed Fett revealing himself to Din Djarin.

Chapter 11: The Heiress

The third episode of The Mandalorian season 2 greatly enriched the show’s Mandalorian history by introducing Bo-Katan Kryze, a former leader of Mandalore, in live action. It was revealed that Din Djarin belonged to a particularly strict group of Mandalorians who followed the traditional Mandalorian ways. Despite their differences, Djarin teamed up with Bo-Katan to seize an Imperial ship, hoping she would share information about the Jedi so he could find others of Grogu’s species.

Chapter 13: The Jedi

The fifth episode of The Mandalorian’s second season was a standout, largely due to the incredible live-action introduction of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. As Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice and a survivor of the devastating Order 66, Ahsoka’s appearance was a major moment for Star Wars fans. The episode also revealed Grogu’s name and confirmed he survived the Jedi Purge. Adding to the excitement was a visually stunning fight between Ahsoka, wielding a white lightsaber, and Morgan Elsbeth, armed with a beskar spear. All these elements combine to make “The Jedi” one of the best episodes The Mandalorian has ever produced.

Chapter 14: The Tragedy

Episode 6 of The Mandalorian season 2 is packed with exciting action, largely due to the return of Boba Fett. He wants his armor back from Din Djarin, and the two, along with Fennec Shand, quickly find themselves battling waves of stormtroopers.

Okay, so Boba Fett finally gets his armor back and unleashes a serious beatdown on those troopers – seriously, he’s using everything, even a Tusken Raider’s staff! But despite all that awesome action, the episode still ends on a really rough note. We see the Razor Crest go up in flames, and even worse, Grogu gets snatched up by the Imperial Dark Troopers and Moff Gideon while he was actually reaching out with the Force, seemingly to a Jedi. It’s a heartbreaking cliffhanger, honestly.

Chapter 16: The Rescue

For many fans, the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian is one of the greatest live-action Star Wars episodes ever made. The episode features an intense duel where Din Djarin defeats Moff Gideon, unexpectedly winning the Darksaber and a potential claim to the throne of Mandalore. The finale is capped off by the stunning return of Luke Skywalker, who answers Grogu’s call and single-handedly destroys all of Gideon’s Dark Troopers – a moment widely considered to be one of Luke’s most impressive in the entire Star Wars saga.

The most emotionally impactful moment of the show might be when Din Djarin takes off his helmet to bid farewell to Grogu.

The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian

Though technically part of The Book of Boba Fett, the last three episodes are very important for Din Djarin and Grogu’s storyline – you could almost consider them a continuation of The Mandalorian season two.

In “Return of the Mandalorian,” Din Djarin starts learning to use the Darksaber and admits he broke the Mandalorian Creed by taking off his helmet. This makes him an outcast until he can perform a purification ritual in the underground waters of Mandalore’s mines. The episode also delves deeper into the history of the Mandalorian destruction and the Empire’s attack on their home planet, showing Bo-Katan’s previous struggles with the Darksaber before Gideon took it. Finally, we see Din Djarin building a new starfighter to replace his destroyed ship, the Razor Crest.

It’s still very important for Din Djarin’s story, even though the show is meant to focus on Boba Fett.

The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 6: From The Desert Comes A Stranger

Most of this episode focuses on Grogu learning the ways of the Jedi with Luke Skywalker. Ahsoka Tano also persuades Din Djarin that letting Grogu continue his training is best, explaining that their close bond would actually make it more difficult. Though Din reluctantly agrees, he does leave Grogu a special gift: a chain-mail shirt made of beskar. Ultimately, Grogu has to decide whether to stay with Luke and finish his Jedi training, or return to Din and give up that path.

This episode also includes a surprise appearance by Cad Bane in live-action, though his role is mainly connected to the story of Boba Fett.
