When it comes to Batman games, the Arkham series immediately comes to mind. However, we believe LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight could offer a unique approach, focusing on Gotham City itself – a crucial element often as important as Batman. To truly immerse players, a Batman game needs to make Gotham feel like a detailed, complex, and engaging place to explore.
As a huge Batman fan, I’ve always thought Gotham City has so much potential beyond just being a backdrop for action. Sometimes, though, open-world games fall into the trap of filling it with pointless tasks just to make the game longer. But when done well, Gotham can really come alive and become a genuinely fun place to play as Batman! That’s what I’m hoping for from LEGO Batman. I’m really curious to see if it can pull it off and how it would even do that. Let’s dive in and find out!
The City Where Crime Never Sleeps
It’s always been a mystery how Bruce Wayne stays so energetic despite his erratic sleep schedule. But Gotham doesn’t prioritize its hero’s health – and that’s fitting. The city’s streets and hidden corners are where criminals thrive, and its famous locations and industrial areas are the battlegrounds where Batman ultimately faces his most dangerous foes.
Gotham City is a core part of Batman’s world, and he knows it well. The upcoming LEGO Batman game will definitely feature this, keeping Batman busy as usual. However, the size of Gotham isn’t as important as how interactive it is. A smaller, more responsive city would be much better than a huge, empty one.

That’s where LEGO shines. Just like it brings famous creations to life, LEGO can make the world of LEGO Batman‘s Gotham City feel real and engaging. LEGO games are always more fun when the environment is a key part of the experience, and Gotham City offers plenty of potential. The game could feel truly alive with hidden puzzles, multiple paths depending on the character you’re playing, rewarding exploration, and even unfolding crimes – offering a rich experience for dedicated players.
Batman’s equipment could behave uniquely depending on what he’s interacting with, and those same environments could offer new possibilities when explored using the tools of other heroes. The game should encourage players to revisit areas as different characters, making exploration more rewarding and detailed. Essentially, each hero’s abilities should open up new ways to interact with the world, even places you’ve already seen.
Turning Gotham City into a playful and interactive environment could help LEGO Batman strike a good balance between its dramatic story and the fun of playing as LEGO characters. Gotham has always been a place where anything can happen for both heroes and villains, and this game should be no different. In fact, Legacy of the Dark Knight should really make Gotham feel like a central part of the story. The question is, how can the game developers achieve that?
No Place Like Home

To really bring the game to life, it’s important to give the city a strong, distinct personality that shapes both the story and how it plays. LEGO Batman blends dark and light themes really well, and Gotham City is the ideal setting to combine those elements for a fun experience. Focusing on iconic landmarks – some of which are already included in the game – is a great first step.
Locations like Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower, and Arkham Asylum aren’t just buildings; they’re steeped in history and offer rich storytelling possibilities. Each one adds to Gotham’s unique background and provides a compelling setting for clashes between Batman and his enemies. These places allow for action sequences that feel connected to the city’s past, while also supporting Batman’s goal of a better future. Ultimately, they help define Gotham City and make it feel like a real, lived-in place for players to explore.
Arkham Asylum is central to many Batman stories, serving not just as a prison for criminals, but also as a place where Bruce Wayne confronts his own inner demons. Wayne Tower isn’t simply Bruce’s business headquarters; it provides the wealth and technology he needs to fight crime. If the new LEGO Batman game can truly capture what makes these locations special, Gotham City itself will become its greatest asset.
While historic buildings contribute to a city’s charm, what truly makes a game world feel immersive and inviting is what happens inside those buildings, and how easily players can move between them. Luckily, the developers have already shown they’re focusing on exciting ways to get around, which is a great sign for creating that engaging experience.

Let’s talk about Gotham itself. It shouldn’t just be a convenient place to land after gliding or find your next swing. The city needs to feel dangerous – it’s Gotham, after all, and Batman needs villains to fight. Each neighborhood should have its own unique atmosphere and history, and it’s up to us to explore and discover those stories as we search for criminals to stop.
Batman’s vehicles need to be useful for investigation and exploration, and naturally fit into how the game is played. This will show Bruce Wayne as a resourceful hero who’s always prepared. Gotham City is the perfect setting to make this happen, and much more. However, a city is only as vibrant as the people who live in it.
The Best and Worst of Gotham
Fortunately, Gotham City has always had a colorful cast of villains and people in need of saving, and in Legacy of the Dark Knight, Batman isn’t working alone – you can play as different heroes, which promises some fun adventures. The game will definitely feature crimes to solve, along with extra challenges, puzzles, rewards, and hidden secrets. These elements create a compelling open world, but whether the game truly succeeds depends on how well they all work together.
The villains in LEGO Batman are just as crucial to the game as Batman himself. Players will wonder how much trouble these bad guys will cause, whether solving puzzles will require skillful use of Batman’s gadgets, and if collecting items will add to the story or simply be tasks to complete. It also remains to be seen if playing with a friend will make exploring the game world more enjoyable, and if they’ll be able to solve puzzles together.

Another important aspect is how much you can personalize the Batcave. Will your actions in Gotham City directly impact your home base, letting you gather items to truly make the Batcave your own? Many details like these remain unknown until the game’s release, but they’re crucial for creating a truly immersive Batman experience.
Just having the typical features of an open-world game isn’t enough for Gotham City. It shouldn’t just be a backdrop for the main story and action; it needs to be a place that truly rewards players who investigate like Batman, the world’s greatest detective. Successfully solving mysteries should feel impactful and give players a real sense of accomplishment.
Batman has become strongly associated with the Arkham series, and it’s time for a new game to establish his own distinct world. While it doesn’t need to surpass Arkham, Legacy of the Dark Knight should create a Gotham that feels dynamic and truly showcases Batman as a powerful force. This would allow it to stand on its own and develop a unique identity separate from the games that first made him famous.
We’ll soon find out if it lives up to the hype! The release is almost here, and we’re really hoping the game is a success.
