Palpatine is arguably the most masterful manipulator in the entire Star Wars saga. He specifically targeted Anakin Skywalker, beginning when Anakin first arrived on Coruscant in The Phantom Menace. Even then, Palpatine hinted at his plans, saying he would closely follow Anakin’s progress. However, the full scope of Palpatine’s deception wasn’t revealed until Revenge of the Sith.
Palpatine didn’t just plan to destroy the Jedi and the Republic; he carefully manipulated Anakin’s feelings and fears, particularly his worry about Padmé’s death, to make him vulnerable to the dark side. Surprisingly, much of what Palpatine told Anakin wasn’t entirely false – his greatest temptation for Anakin actually held a grain of truth.
Palpatine Did Know How To Stop People From Dying

In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin is haunted by terrifying nightmares of Padmé dying during childbirth. These dreams deeply disturb him because he had similar premonitions about his mother, Shmi, before she passed away in Attack of the Clones, fueling his anxieties. He first tries to handle his fear responsibly by seeking advice from Master Yoda. However, Yoda’s suggestion to simply accept loss doesn’t help Anakin overcome his worries.
Palpatine’s claim that the Force can overcome death is a key factor in Anakin Skywalker’s choice to betray Mace Windu and the Jedi, ultimately becoming Palpatine’s apprentice. While it initially seems like a deception, a recent Star Wars book, Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith: The Chronicles of Emperor Palpatine, reveals that Palpatine was partially telling the truth.
Palpatine explains that his master found a way to use the Force to prevent death, and he himself learned to transfer his consciousness into new bodies, essentially achieving immortality. However, this ability was different from the promise he made to Anakin about saving Padmé.
Palpatine Was Never Going To Use This Power For Anyone Else

The most important thing about Palpatine’s research in The Secrets of the Sith is that he wasn’t trying to stop death in general—he was focused on transferring his own consciousness into a new body. This is precisely what he accomplishes, which explains how he’s able to return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s clear he wasn’t interested in saving others, not even Padmé.
Like most of his actions in Star Wars, Palpatine’s use of this Force ability was purely for his own benefit. He never intended to help anyone else with it. In fact, Padmé’s death actually served Palpatine’s plans perfectly – it eliminated a rival for Anakin’s devotion and guaranteed Anakin would fall to the dark side.
Palpatine Knew Exactly How To Play To Anakin’s Desperation

It’s no surprise that Palpatine’s claims about the power to overcome death, even if accurate, were just another way to control Anakin. Both Revenge of the Sith and the Clone Wars series demonstrate that Anakin had begun to trust Palpatine, sharing personal details with him. Palpatine clearly understood Anakin’s biggest fear was losing Padmé, and he even revealed he knew about Anakin’s mother’s death and his subsequent actions against the Tusken Raiders.
Using the hope of saving Padmé proved to be a powerful tactic, especially after Anakin spoke with Yoda about his troubling dreams, which left him feeling isolated and worried. By the time of Revenge of the Sith, Anakin was too emotionally vulnerable to recognize Palpatine’s scheming. Grief over his mother’s death and the fear of losing Padmé, who was pregnant, clouded his judgment and made it impossible for him to think clearly.
Palpatine’s offer to Anakin was especially persuasive because it contained a sliver of truth. However, it was predictable that Palpatine only ever intended to help himself, and had no genuine interest in saving anyone else.
