The Avengers are famous for battling some of Marvel’s most powerful and dangerous villains. They initially formed to stop Loki, and quickly realized that certain threats required a team effort. Since then, they’ve become known as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” though they really protect the entire universe from world-ending dangers. While the Avengers’ enemies are incredibly powerful on their own, many have learned that there’s strength in numbers too, leading to massive team-ups of villains determined to defeat the heroes.
It’s incredibly tough for heroes to win when villains team up. Even if those villains don’t always get along, combining forces significantly increases their chances of success. Here are seven of the most memorable and impactful villain alliances in Marvel history, resulting in some fantastic stories.
7) Doctor Doom and Namor

As a longtime follower of Marvel, I’ve seen some unlikely team-ups, but Doctor Doom and Namor? That one really shouldn’t work, yet it does. They’re both driven by a shared loathing of Reed Richards, but let’s be honest, these are two supremely arrogant rulers who are notoriously difficult to even be in the same room with. Despite that, they’ve proven to be a surprisingly effective duo, giving the Fantastic Four and the Avengers real trouble. Even when Namor’s playing the hero, Doom and his nation of Latveria remain his closest allies. Honestly, they’re a wildly entertaining and genuinely dangerous force within the Marvel Universe, and I’m here for it.
6) Magneto and Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch is currently a powerful sorceress and a respected member of the Avengers, but she has a history of turning to villainy. After her divorce from Vision, the revelation about their children, and Vision’s subsequent turn to evil and world domination attempt, she once again became a villain, teaming up with her father, Magneto. Her brother, Quicksilver, also joined their side, and together they easily defeated the West Coast Avengers, demonstrating their combined power and threat.
5) Red Skull and Ahab

Red Skull is arguably the most intensely prejudiced villain in the Marvel Universe—a significant claim, considering how many prejudiced characters exist within it. After the conflict between the Avengers and the X-Men, he focused his hatred on mutants. He began by stealing the brain of the deceased Charles Xavier to gain his psychic abilities. Then, he assembled a team called the S-Men to target mutants, and eventually joined forces with Ahab, a bigoted cyborg from the future. Together, they created mutant concentration camps and unleashed a powerful being called the Red Onslaught. This duo became the main adversaries of the Avengers Unity Squad, challenging this new team of heroes and their attempt to bridge the divide between humans and mutants.
4) Kang and the Apocalypse Twins

The Uncanny Avengers faced a particularly strong villainous team in the Apocalypse Twins – the children of Archangel and Pestilence. After X-Force initially defeated them, Kang the Conqueror took the twins and raised them with the intention of turning them into weapons against Earth’s heroes. He even subjected them to harsh conditions in Red Skull and Ahab’s camp to make them stronger. Ultimately, the twins turned on each other, leading to a memorable Avengers storyline in Uncanny Avengers (Vol. 1) #7-22. Kang and the Apocalypse Twins made a formidable team, constantly manipulating each other to achieve their own objectives.
3) The Cabal

Following the defeat of the Skrull invasion and the death of Veranke, Norman Osborn cleverly positioned himself as a leader by taking control of SHIELD, the Avengers, and the Superhero Initiative. He then formed a secret group – a new version of the Illuminati – composed of powerful individuals like Namor, Emma Frost, Doctor Doom, Loki, and the Hood. Osborn manipulated this group to further his own ambitions. Later, during a crisis involving alternate realities known as the Incursions, a second Cabal emerged. This group – consisting of Thanos, Namor, Black Swan, Maximus the Mad, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, and the Maker – attempted to save the multiverse, but their methods were ruthless and questionable.
2) Dark Avengers

As a comic book movie critic, I have to say, “Dark Reign” was a game-changer for Marvel, really flipping the script by putting the bad guys in charge. Norman Osborn, ever the manipulator, realized he needed a believable face for his power grab. So, he assembled a seriously twisted team – imagine this: Moonstone posing as Ms. Marvel, Bullseye mimicking Hawkeye, and a Venom and Daken stand-in for Spider-Man and Wolverine. He even brought in Captain Marvel and kept some heavy hitters from the old Avengers – Ares and Sentry – all to create a dark, messed-up version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. And honestly, they did save the world a few times, but always on Osborn’s terms, which ultimately led to their downfall at Asgard. He tried to rebuild the team later, hoping for a different outcome, but the Avengers proved too strong once again.
1) Masters of Evil

The Masters of Evil were once the Avengers’ most formidable enemies. This villainous team is known for frequently changing its members, bringing together a variety of lesser-known villains to fight Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Originally created by Baron Heinrich Zemo, the team has since been led by figures like his son Helmut, Ultron, Egghead, and Doctor Octopus, and has even existed across multiple universes. Though their popularity has waned, the Masters of Evil are still considered the greatest team of villains the Avengers have ever faced.
