1991 Sega Genesis Exclusive Game Returns With New Release 35 Years Later

A classic game that first appeared on the Sega Genesis in 1991 is getting a new release, 35 years later. While Sega no longer makes consoles, the Genesis was actually very popular, selling over 30 million units. That’s comparable to the N64, and more than consoles like the GameCube, original Xbox, Wii U, and PlayStation Vita. Because of this, a lot of people still fondly remember the Genesis and its unique collection of games, many of which you could only play on that system.

Back in 1991, Wolf Team (later becoming part of Bandai Namco in 2012) created an action game called Arcus Odyssey, and it was initially available only on the Sega Genesis. While the game eventually came to other systems, it first launched as a Genesis exclusive. Now, in 2026, Limited Run Games is bringing back this classic with a special physical release – but not for today’s consoles. They’re making it for the original Sega Genesis!

A New Piece for Sega Genesis Collectors

So, Limited Run Games is releasing a special version of Arcus Odyssey – they’re calling it the Standard Edition. It comes with a cool amber-colored cartridge, a printed insert for the cartridge case, a full-color instruction manual, and a numbered slipcover. Honestly, it’s not a cheap pickup, even though this game is pretty old-school. It’ll set you back $60.

You can currently pre-order the item, but pre-orders will close on May 24th. Limited Run Games estimates it will ship between January 1st and March 31st, 2027. However, it’s worth noting that they sometimes ship orders later than expected.

Although Arcus Odyssey was generally well-received when it came out in the early 1990s, it never got a follow-up game, likely because sales weren’t strong. The game is an isometric action RPG where you slash your way through enemies, and it even supports cooperative play. The story is a typical fantasy adventure from that era.

Is Arcus Odyssey still enjoyable in 2026 or 2027? Not really. Players new to the game or unfamiliar with this style of older games likely won’t find much to appreciate. However, if you have fond memories of the original, that nostalgia might carry you through.
