Founded in 2000, Ufotable quickly rose to prominence as a leading animation studio. They’ve created many popular anime series and films, including the Fate/Zero and The Garden of Sinners franchises. Their adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer manga, originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump, became a global hit. The series is now one of the most successful anime of all time, and its newest film, Infinity Castle, has broken all previous box office records.
Due to its huge success, the studio is planning to create even more content, including a new fantasy anime movie. Called Witch on the Holy Night, the film is based on a popular visual novel by Type-Moon and will be released in Japan later this year. Although a specific release date hasn’t been announced, the studio recently revealed the three main characters.
Witch on the Holy Night Introduces The Main Trio
The official X handle of the anime introduces the main trio of the story:
- Aoko Aozaki, voiced by Haruka Tomatsu
- Sojuro Shizuki, voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi
- Alice Kunoji, voiced by Kana Hanazawa
The X account also revealed short descriptions of each character. Aoko is the lead character, a new high school student and a magician. Yusuke appears to be a regular boy who goes to school with Aoko. And Alice is a witch who lives privately and attends an elite girls’ school.
What Is Witch on the Holy Night About?
This story, created by Kinoko Nasu – known for works like Garden of Sinners and Fate – takes place in the 1980s, the beginning of the Type-Moon universe. It centers around an old mansion in Misaki Town, which locals say is haunted by a witch. Inside, Aoko Aozaki is learning magic from Alice Kuonji, believed to be the mansion’s mysterious inhabitant. Aoko’s family happens to own the land the town is built on.
Peace in the town is shattered when strange intruders appear, forcing the girls to investigate. After destroying a mysterious puppet with magic, they meet a young boy named Yusuke who saw everything. He soon becomes involved with the mansion and the world of magic as the girls continue their search for whoever is causing the disturbances. This visual novel tells a story leading up to the events of Tsukihime, focusing on the history of Shiki Tohno’s teacher, Aoko Aozaki.
The movie was first announced in February, and a short teaser trailer showed off the two main characters and the important setting – a large mansion. While a specific release date for Witch on the Holy Night hasn’t been announced yet, it will likely first be shown in Japanese theaters in 2026. Anime films usually become available internationally, including in the U.S., a few months after their initial release in Japan, so we can anticipate a worldwide release soon after it premieres there.
