U.S. Audiences Are Sleeping on Netflix’s New 6-Part Crime Drama With Near Perfect RT Score

Netflix adds so many new shows and movies that its Top 10 list is constantly in motion. Just last week in the US, the most popular show changed dramatically. While The Roast of Kevin Hart held the top spot for several days, it was quickly overtaken by newer content over the weekend. Netflix boosted its rankings with both the broadcast of the brief Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano fight and the release of the first season of the crime drama Nemesis. The show Worst Ex Ever also continued to draw in a large audience.

Viewers also have a new option for entertainment with the crime-drama Legends. This UK series, created and written by Neil Forsyth, has quickly become popular, gaining millions of views and positive reviews. However, there’s a strange trend: while people worldwide are watching it, audiences in the United States seem to have missed it.

Netflix’s Legends Is a Near Perfect Crime Thriller That Audiences Are Ignoring

The 1990s crime drama Legends is based on the incredible true story of ordinary citizens recruited by British Customs to go undercover and dismantle drug gangs from within. With no prior law enforcement experience, these individuals were tasked with creating entirely new identities and infiltrating the criminal underworld – a dangerous mission undertaken to protect their communities and country, and ultimately earning them the name ‘Legends’.

The new series, Legends, boasts a stellar British cast, with well-known actors like Steve Coogan, Tom Burke (from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Hayley Squires (Beau Is Afraid, I, Daniel Blake), Aml Ameen (A Man in Full, Rustin), Douglas Hodge (G20, Joker), Tom Hughes (The English, Victoria), and Charlotte Ritchie (YOU, Ghosts).

According to Netflix’s own viewing data, the series Legends received 3.4 million views worldwide, making it the fourth most popular TV show on the platform. This placed it behind titles like Worst Ex Ever, Should I Marry A Murderer?, and Man on Fire, all of which had over 12.6 million views. While Legends didn’t appear on the weekly Top 10 list in the United States, it was a top 3 show in the UK and reached the Top 10 in over 40 countries, including Canada, Australia, and Ireland.

It’s really surprising that the new Netflix crime series, Legends, hasn’t gotten more attention in the US. British crime dramas have been popular on streaming services worldwide for years, and this show has received fantastic reviews. Currently, it has a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 25 reviews, and has even earned the rare “Certified Fresh” designation.

The show is gaining a lot of positive attention, especially from British critics. Empire Magazine gave it 4 out of 5 stars, praising its strong cast and suspenseful plot set against the backdrop of Britain’s drug scene, and calling it a standout true-crime drama. The Sunday Times even compared it to the acclaimed HBO series The Wire, highlighting that both shows focus on an entire city, not just the police and criminals involved.

It’s hard to say whether the reviews will attract a US audience, or if people will discover the show later, but it hasn’t gained much traction there yet. When they do start watching, though, they’re in for something special.
