Stephen King‘s sci-fi thriller series is climbing the charts once again.
Stephen King is a hugely popular author with many well-known horror stories, so there are always new adaptations being made. Just on TV, viewers can look forward to a remake of Carrie from the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagan. Plus, new seasons of It: Welcome to Derry and The Institute are planned for HBO Max and MGM+, respectively.
Currently, the sci-fi series Under the Dome is gaining popularity. According to FlixPatrol, the show—based on Stephen King’s novel—is now number 7 on Apple TV’s global charts for movies you can rent or buy. It’s doing especially well in the U.K., where it jumped from number 19 on May 16th to number 8.
Premiering on CBS in June 2013, Under the Dome is a series based on Stephen King’s 2009 novel of the same name, with Steven Spielberg as one of its executive producers. The show centers around a small town in New England that’s unexpectedly sealed off from the outside world by a massive, invisible dome. The story follows the residents as they struggle to survive and uncover the mystery behind this strange event.
Originally from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, the show Under the Dome started strong, attracting over 17 million viewers. While those numbers decreased over time – falling to 4.2 million for the final episode in September 2015 – the series still gained a dedicated following who remained invested in its complicated storyline.
The TV adaptation of Under the Dome featured a big cast with many recognizable actors. These included Dean Norris from Breaking Bad, Britt Robertson of Scream 4, and Eddie Cahill, known from Friends. The cast also included Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Natalie Martinez, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, Jolene Purdy, Aisha Hinds, Jeff Fahey, Karla Crome, and Kylie Bunbury.
Developed by Brian K. Vaughan and overseen by executive producer and showrunner Neal Baer, the CBS series initially received positive reviews, earning an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, later seasons weren’t as well-received. Critics and viewers found some of the show’s explanations unconvincing, and this likely contributed to the cancellation of Under the Dome before a fourth season could air.
With Under the Dome currently popular again online, now might be a good time for science fiction fans to revisit the show, especially since it ended over a decade ago.
