The upcoming DCU series Lanterns has sparked debate among fans. While the DC universe is typically known for its epic, large-scale stories, Lanterns seems to be taking a different approach – a more down-to-earth, detective-style show with superpowers and alien elements. Recent information reveals the series will jump between two time periods, 2016 and 2026, and the dynamic between Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre) isn’t a partnership. Trailers suggest they’ll be competing against each other instead.
The show Lanterns has faced criticism during its promotion, with many viewers wanting to see more of the Green Lantern powers in action. Showrunner Chris Mundy recently acknowledged this, stating that the show would, of course, feature green energy. The latest trailer finally delivers on that expectation, showcasing the impressive Power Rings. Hopefully, this will put those concerns to rest. However, the trailer also reveals a surprisingly different storyline, which is sure to spark further discussion.
There’s Only One Power Ring Between Hal & John
The Green Lanterns are like intergalactic police officers, directed by the powerful Guardians of the Universe. Each Lantern is responsible for a specific area of space, where they fight crime, defend against dangers, and protect against terrible events. Usually, there’s only one Lantern per sector, but Earth is different. Throughout history, multiple Green Lanterns have operated on Earth at the same time, including well-known heroes like Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. In fact, Cruz and Baz once teamed up as partners when they were just starting out.
Viewers quickly picked up on something unusual about the Lanterns movie. Promotional images rarely showed Hal and John using their powers simultaneously. The initial trailer strongly suggested John would replace Hal, and that Hal would be unhappy about it. The tagline, “Only one can wear the ring,” further implied the story would center around a single Power Ring and John’s attempt to prove he deserved to take Hal’s place. This theory about the movie’s plot unsurprisingly caused a split among fans.
The DCU’s decision makes sense – creating a dramatic rivalry between these two characters offers a strong emotional foundation for the story. However, it’s a risky move. Positioning Hal and John as opponents could split the Green Lantern fanbase, causing friction between those who favor one over the other. While the story has potential, it needs to be handled carefully to avoid further controversy and division among viewers.
Does the Rivalry Between Hal and John Explain Lanterns’ Whole Plot?

The trailers for Lanterns have mainly focused on the storyline from 2016, showing Hal and John working as a team. We know there are two mysteries: one Hal and John investigate in 2016, and another, currently unknown, happening in 2026. However, these mysteries must be connected somehow, meaning John’s experiences with Hal in the past will likely be important to solving the 2026 case. The latest trailer might offer some significant hints about this connection.
The trailer begins with a strong hint of what’s to come: Hal declares John will only get the Power Ring if he’s dead. It concludes with John being told to take the Ring from Hal, suggesting a conflict between the two. We also see a puzzling scene of Guy Gardner visiting John Stewart in prison. Based on these clues, it seems Hal Jordan is presumed dead by 2016, and John Stewart is wrongly accused of his murder. John is then imprisoned for a decade, and Guy visits him in 2026.
Okay, as a huge DC fan, this makes a lot of sense! It finally explains something that’s been bugging me – why Guy Gardner has a Power Ring in the Superman movie when we’re told there’s only one per sector. It seems like John Stewart isn’t actually a Green Lantern in this timeline. Instead, he’s someone who desperately wants to be, and he’s even being blamed for Hal Jordan’s death! The only way Guy would even bother with John is if there’s proof Hal might still be alive. Both the 2016 and 2026 mysteries really boil down to the same question: what really happened to Hal Jordan?
The comic book version of Hal Jordan was once replaced by another Lantern, Kyle Rayner, after a devastating event. Hal experienced a tragic downfall, losing his mind after his home city was destroyed and becoming known as Parallax. Later, DC Comics revised this storyline, explaining that Hal hadn’t truly gone mad, but had instead been possessed by the Parallax entity – a being of fear trapped within the power rings. This fits perfectly with the recent trailer, which heavily emphasizes fear with the repeated question, “Are you afraid?” – a clever way to hint at the return of Parallax.
What Does This DCU Theory Mean For Lanterns?

If this new series is accurate, Lanterns will adapt a particularly divisive Green Lantern storyline: the origin of Hal Jordan’s transformation into Parallax. It has the potential to improve upon the original comic book version, which initially made Hal seem overly villainous. The comics later introduced Parallax as a convenient explanation to restore Hal’s heroic image. The DC Universe can handle this story more effectively by foreshadowing Parallax as early as 2016 and fully introducing the threat in 2026, positioning John Stewart and Guy Gardner as key defenders.
The previews strongly suggest Hal is deeply afraid – afraid of becoming outdated, being forced into retirement, and losing his abilities. This fear is now fueling his anger, making him susceptible to the corrupting influence within the rings. It’s a clever way to connect everything, framing Hal’s relationship with John Stewart as a key factor in his potential downfall, and hinting that only John might be able to save him. If this leads to a Parallax-style twist, it would justify the risks DC took with the Lanterns storyline, as the result would be incredibly impactful.
