The Transformers franchise is a global phenomenon, but many fans don’t realize its long history. While Michael Bay’s films brought the robots to life with impressive visuals and realistic transformations, most fans originally discovered Transformers through the animated series. However, before Bay’s movies, there was actually a Transformers film released decades earlier.
This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original Transformers movie, appropriately titled Transformers: The Movie (1986). To mark this milestone, Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing the film back to theaters with a special re-release.
Transformers: The Movie (1986) 4K Version Is Headed to Theaters

To celebrate its 40th anniversary and “Transformers Day” (September 17th, the date the original animated series first aired in 1984), Transformers: The Movie will return to theaters on September 17, 2026. Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment announced they’re working together to let fans experience the film’s action and music on the big screen again.
According to Alyse D’Antuono, VP of Global Brand & Franchise Strategy at Hasbro, fans have loved this Transformers movie for years, proving its powerful story and enduring influence on pop culture. Releasing it in theaters again lets dedicated fans enjoy it together, and introduces a new generation to a key moment in Transformers history.
Transformers Is Having Fun With Fans’ Trauma

The 1986 animated film, Transformers: The Movie, gained a dedicated following, largely because it was surprisingly shocking for young viewers. The film stunned fans by killing off many beloved characters from the original cartoon series early on, most notably in the intense battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron, which resulted in Optimus Prime’s death and left Megatron severely damaged and rebuilt as the more powerful Galvatron. While it essentially served as a soft reboot, introducing a new team of Autobots led by Hot Rod (later Rodimus Prime) and a massive new threat in the planet-sized Unicron, the changes weren’t initially well-received. Eventually, the original Optimus Prime and the classic Transformers returned as the main focus of the franchise.
This new release of the movie is cleverly using the painful memories many fans have of the original—specifically, the upsetting events in Transformers: The Movie—as a marketing tactic. They’re even calling it an “Apology Tour” and jokingly referencing a particularly sad scene with Optimus Prime, using his image as a meme with the caption, “40 years later, it still hits like a truck.”
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, stated that Transformers: The Movie is one of the most influential animated films ever made. He noted that even after 40 years, it continues to be a favorite among fans of all ages. Fathom is excited to partner with Hasbro to show a restored 4K version of the film in theaters.

The 1986 animated film Transformers: The Movie boasts an impressive voice cast, featuring Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Frank Welker as Megatron, and the legendary Orson Welles as Unicron. Other notable actors include Judd Nelson, who voiced Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wrek-Gar, and Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus.
Okay, so Transformers: The Movie came out way back in 1986, and it was the first full-length film for the whole Transformers universe. Honestly, it totally changed everything! What started as the usual Autobot vs. Decepticon fight quickly became much bigger. They introduced this incredible thing called the Matrix of Leadership, and then Unicron showed up – this planet-eating robot who was seriously scary. It was a huge turning point in the story, and I remember being completely shocked as a kid – it was way more intense than anything I expected from a cartoon movie!
You’ll be able to get tickets for the 40th anniversary showing of The Transformers: The Movie later this summer, both online and at many theater box offices. Check Fathom Entertainment for details, and join the conversation about the film on the ComicBook Forum!
