Coronation Street reveals first look at “ruthless” newcomer Idris Nazir ahead of soap debut

A newcomer is set to turn heads and ruffle feathers in Coronation Street next week.

I’m so excited for Idris Nazir to arrive! Junade Khan is playing him, and he’s going to be causing a stir when he drives onto the street on May 26th. Apparently, he’s Alya’s dad’s cousin, Kal, and everyone’s already noticing his fancy car – it sounds like he’s going to make a big impression on Weatherfield!

Producer Kate Brooks described the new cast member as incredibly charming and charismatic. She noted he’s a shrewd businessman with a competitive edge, willing to do what it takes to succeed, but also possesses a remarkable ability to win people over.

It quickly becomes clear that Alya isn’t the only person he recognizes. He actually met Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) at a family event for the Nazirs over a decade ago, and they soon begin to feel a connection.

“He’s a new love interest for Leanne. The attraction is instantaneous,” Brooks continued.

As a viewer, I’m really seeing Leanne change. She’s been holding onto a lot of anger towards Toyah and Nick, understandably, because she felt like she’d lost out on a certain life. But then this new guy shows up, and he just… brightens everything up for her. He’s got everything going for him – he’s funny, attractive, and definitely stirs things up, but he’s also got a bit of a mysterious side, which is intriguing.

He’s strong-willed and doesn’t back down easily. He quickly challenges people who try to dominate or take charge.

In addition to pursuing a relationship with Leanne, he’ll also win over teen Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) and start a new competitive dynamic with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).

If you’ve been a long-time viewer of Coronation Street, or have been enjoying the classic episodes on ITV3, you might recognize the actor.

The actor said he briefly appeared on ‘Corrie’ in 2008, playing a boyfriend for Rosie Webster.

I played a character named Saj who was kidnapped by John Stape, and we first met on set at a nightclub. Helen Flanagan jokingly called me ‘Sarge,’ which was a fun memory! I also remember scenes in the Rovers Return with Sally, Gail, and Carla. When I recently returned to the show, I recognized Alison King and told her I’d seen her before.

He described his new character as complex and highly driven. Having experienced a difficult and lonely childhood filled with hardship and neglect, this character has been forced to rely entirely on himself to succeed.

He’s an individualist, different from the rest of his family, and has achieved recognition on his own terms. While driven by a desire for success and luxury, he also possesses a hidden sensitivity.

This is the first role where I’ve been able to explore that part of myself, and it’s a wonderful opportunity as an actor.

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 or can be streamed from 7am on ITVX.
