Superman is DC Comics’ most iconic hero, and he’s consistently demonstrated his strength in countless battles. While he prefers not to fight, he’s dedicated to protecting humanity and helping people reach their full potential. He’s faced some incredibly dangerous villains from across the DC Universe and often saves the day with his amazing powers. However, even Superman isn’t invincible. He has weaknesses that enemies have used against him, and he’s been defeated in battle by powerful foes.
Even though Superman is incredibly powerful, he’s been defeated – and even killed – by certain villains. Not all defeats are the same; sometimes he barely loses, but other times the outcome is total. These seven DC villains have proven Superman isn’t unbeatable, managing to destroy him in battle.
7) General Zod

Superman consistently battles powerful enemies from across the DC Universe, and General Zod is consistently one of his most formidable foes. Zod, a Kryptonian general, was originally exiled to the Phantom Zone for attempting to rule Krypton, but he escaped after the planet’s destruction. He’s clashed with Superman many times, notably in a brutal fight depicted in “Last Son,” where Zod, along with Ursa and Non, nearly killed the hero and trapped him in the Phantom Zone. Zod possesses the same powers as Superman, and his military background gives him a tactical edge, allowing him to overcome Kal-El even though Superman is more experienced with his abilities.
6) The Anti-Monitor

The story Crisis on Infinite Earths is a thrilling tale of heroes from five different Earths uniting to stop the Anti-Monitor from wiping out all of existence. In the seventh issue, the heroes bravely confront the Anti-Monitor in his own anti-matter universe. Superman and Supergirl rush ahead, but the villain quickly overpowers Superman, nearly defeating him. Supergirl then intervenes, saving her cousin’s life but sacrificing her own. Ultimately, the Superman from Earth-Two manages to destroy the Anti-Monitor, avenging the brutal attack on his Earth-One counterpart.
5) Perpetua

Perpetua originally built the entire DC Multiverse as a weapon against her allies and enemies. After being defeated, she was trapped beyond the Source Wall, but she returned when the wall was destroyed during the events of Dark Knights: Metal. She then became the main villain in Scott Snyder’s Justice League comic series. Perpetua fought the Justice League twice, easily overpowering them both times, even Superman. In their final confrontation, she completely defeated the League, capturing Superman and using his power to fuel the machinery of Megapokolips within the Metalverse. She was far more powerful than Superman – the difference was immense, making any resistance futile.
4) Brainiac

Brainiac is consistently ranked among Superman’s most dangerous enemies, even if he isn’t as well-known as Lex Luthor. This incredibly intelligent alien cyborg travels the cosmos collecting and destroying cities. He’s armed with incredibly powerful weapons and is physically strong enough to challenge Superman directly. Throughout the years, Brainiac has repeatedly proven to be a major threat, consistently exploiting Superman’s vulnerabilities and overpowering him in battle. He’s one of the most formidable foes Superman has ever faced, and his wins against the hero demonstrate just how powerful he is.
3) Darkseid

Darkseid is widely considered DC’s ultimate villain, fittingly as he is the God of Evil. He’s incredibly powerful, ranking among the strongest beings in the entire multiverse, and consistently overpowers most heroes he fights. While Superman and Darkseid have clashed many times, with Superman occasionally winning, Darkseid often proves too strong for Earth’s hero, sometimes even defeating him decisively. Darkseid’s power significantly exceeds Superman’s, and the hero doesn’t always have what it takes to win.
2) Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is widely known as Superman’s most formidable enemy. Their conflicts are legendary, pushing both heroes to their absolute limits. Although Superman ultimately prevails, Luthor has repeatedly managed to defeat him. He’s done this through inventions like Kryptonite weapons, the use of red sun radiation, and powerful armor that allows him to fight Superman directly. Luthor is surprisingly strong and resilient, and Superman understands that underestimating him is a serious mistake.
1) Doomsday

“Death of Superman” was a massive hit for DC Comics in the 1990s. While Superman had died in various non-official comic book stories before, this was the first time the main version of the character was killed. A new villain called Doomsday was created specifically to defeat Superman, using incredible strength to overwhelm him. Both Superman and Doomsday ultimately survived the battle, but it sparked a long-lasting rivalry. They’ve fought many times since, and Doomsday consistently proves to be a formidable opponent, often inflicting serious damage and nearly winning.
