A shocking car crash in Ohio in 2022, which killed two young men, wasn’t what it seemed, according to investigators. The new true crime documentary, The Crash, details the entire story and has quickly become popular with viewers on streaming platforms.
Only a few days after its release, The Crash has quickly become one of Netflix’s most popular movies, reaching the No. 2 spot worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. It’s currently the No. 1 movie in countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK. The documentary is also gaining popularity in many other places around the globe, including Romania, Mexico, Germany, France, Ireland, and Chile.
The Tragic Incident Is Revisited 4 Years Later
On July 31, 2022, a devastating crash occurred in Strongsville, Ohio. Teen driver Mackenzie Shirilla was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and their friend, Davion, home from a graduation party when she slammed into a building at over 100 miles per hour. Investigators soon suspected the crash wasn’t an accident, believing Mackenzie, who was the sole survivor, intentionally drove into the building. The case received a lot of media attention, but the filmmakers behind the documentary The Crash felt it was crucial to revisit the tragedy and give a voice to those impacted by it.
Scott told Netflix that although similar stories existed, many of the individuals involved hadn’t had a chance to share their perspectives and still felt it was important to do so.
Johnson explained that their goal while making the film was to represent all sides of the story as fairly and truthfully as possible. They wanted to provide viewers with all the information needed to form their own opinions about the events.
Some Debate Remains Over Whether the Crash Was an Accident
Dom was 20 years old and living with Mackenzie when the crash happened. Mackenzie had recently graduated and moved in just weeks before. Witnesses described their relationship as intense and unpredictable, despite seeming very close. Davion, who died in the crash, was only 19. Dom dreamed of starting his own clothing business, and Davion had plans to go to college, but both of those futures were tragically cut short.
I’ve been following the case closely, and even after months of investigation and Mackenzie’s arrest for aggravated murder, I’m still not sure what happened. Police seem convinced it was intentional, but others, including myself, believe it could have been a terrible accident. The new documentary, The Crash, presents both sides of the story so well, and honestly, it leaves you to decide for yourself what really happened. It’s a really compelling look at everything, and I think it’s important to see all the angles.
