As a total TV fanatic, I’ve noticed spinoffs are always being talked about whenever a show gets popular – or even just gets some attention. It’s been happening forever, right? Like, Cheers gave us Frasier, Breaking Bad led to Better Call Saul, and… well, Friends gave us Joey. But these days, with networks and streamers desperate to squeeze every last drop of value out of anything remotely successful, it feels like spinoffs are popping up everywhere. HBO hasn’t been huge on them historically, but with how much they’re expanding the Game of Thrones world and making shows based on existing movies and franchises like The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy, I get the feeling we’re going to see a lot more of them soon.
I’ve been a huge fan of The Pitt – it’s seriously one of the best shows on TV right now! It’s amazing how each episode feels like a real hour in a Pittsburgh emergency room. With all the buzz and the Emmy win, everyone’s been wondering if they’ll make a spin-off, but Noah Whyle, one of the stars and producers, seems to be saying it might not happen, or at least not in the way we’ve all imagined.
A spin-off focusing on the night shift team, led by Shawn Hatosy’s Dr. Jack Abbott, seems like the most probable next step. These characters have resonated with viewers and offer a different dynamic than the main cast. However, despite fan requests, the creator, Whyle, dismissed the possibility during an appearance on the A Lot More podcast, stating:
I recently mentioned that I believe our current amount of night shifts is sufficient. It seems like some of you would prefer more, but I feel what we have is appropriate. I still don’t think we need to add more—the people who typically work nights are fantastic, and it creates a really positive atmosphere. Interestingly, many of those night shift workers are mothers who prefer to be home with their children during the day. Because of this, it’s generally a calmer and more relaxed environment than you might expect.
Would A Night Shift Spinoff Of The Pitt Work?

It’s no surprise people have suggested a show focusing on the night shift team. Even with limited screen time, these characters are memorable and engaging. Beyond Abbott, Dr. John Shen, charge nurse Lena Handzo, and many others create a compelling group dynamic. Season 2 especially hinted at a potential spinoff, with new night shift staff being introduced and characters like Nurse Diaz joining the team. Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Ellis, becoming a series regular for Season 3 further fueled those expectations.
The night shift team has a different energy than the day shift. Working overnight creates a unique atmosphere, and they seem to function more closely as a team, despite their own difficulties. It would be interesting to see more of that dynamic play out. While it’s an oversimplification to say the lack of drama is simply because many of the night shift workers are mothers, the observation that a spinoff isn’t needed right now is accurate.
The Pitt is a relatively new series, currently finishing its second season with a third one planned. It still has a lot of potential for developing its characters and stories. While a spin-off might be possible in the future, launching one now would feel premature and opportunistic. There’s no need to expand the universe just yet, as The Pitt could easily continue for several more years – a point the creator, Whyle, made on a recent podcast.
I believe that when you have something truly successful, it’s best not to rush its expansion. Spreading it too thin across different stories or spin-offs can weaken its impact and make it lose its unique appeal as people become overly familiar with it.
We’ll likely see a continuation of The Pitt at some point, perhaps focusing on the overnight crew or a new hospital setting, and it’s smart that they’re taking their time with it.
The Pitt Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on HBO Max.
