Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill‘s war movie conquers a major target.
Director Guy Ritchie often works with the same actors in his films. He’s directed several projects featuring stars like Jason Statham, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Eiza González, and Jude Law. His most popular movies often include these frequent collaborators, and he has several new projects in development, suggesting he’ll continue directing for a long time. Henry Cavill is one such actor who’s worked with Ritchie multiple times, and their latest film, a new war epic, is currently in theaters.
As a movie critic, I’m keeping a close eye on the streaming charts, and right now, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is absolutely dominating on Peacock here in the US. It’s really impressive to see it beating out such popular titles like The Secret Life of Pets and The Boss Baby, even classics with stars like Jake Gyllenhaal in The Day After Tomorrow and Brendan Fraser in The Mummy. Released in theaters on April 19th, this isn’t your typical war movie; it’s a heightened, more violent take on Winston Churchill’s real-life Special Operations Executive, brought to life with Guy Ritchie’s signature style. And the cast is fantastic – Henry Cavill leads a great group including Alan Ritchson, Cary Elwes, and Henry Golding, making it a really fun watch.
With a reported budget of $60 million, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare needed to earn between $120 and $150 million at the box office to cover its costs. Unfortunately, the film flopped, earning only $29.7 million worldwide. Despite its poor performance in theaters, viewers who did see the movie generally loved it. It currently boasts a 91% audience score and a 68% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The enthusiastic response from audiences is likely why The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is currently the most popular title on Peacock. The Guy Ritchie film quickly became a hit after its release on the streaming service on May 18th, and its availability coincided perfectly with the release of Ritchie’s new action thriller, In the Grey. That new film, starring Henry Cavill, debuted in theaters worldwide on May 15th and also reunites the director with Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, who previously appeared in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
The positive reception to The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on Peacock could give a lift to In the Grey in theaters, and the new action movie really needs it. In the Grey only earned $2.9 million domestically during its opening weekend, and has made a total of $3.4 million worldwide so far (according to Box Office Mojo), which isn’t a strong start. While the exact budget for In the Grey hasn’t been announced, it likely cost around the same amount as The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Hopefully, renewed interest in the 2024 film will help boost the performance of Ritchie and Cavill’s latest release.
