This Forgotten Star Wars Line Remains the Most Important Quote in the Sequel Trilogy

This franchise is a perfect example of how high and low things can go. Despite some truly terrible installments, it’s remarkably survived, and even its weakest entries often have moments fans cherish. However, even critically acclaimed parts, like some scenes from Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, can be surprisingly overlooked.

The sequel trilogy kicked off with a sense of both familiar history and intriguing questions, centered around the character Lor San Tekka and his meeting with Poe Dameron on Jakku. He entrusted Dameron with a device, saying it would “begin to make things right.” This line became significant for both the story and the fans, even as the series took unexpected turns.

The Force Awakens Looked to the Past to Set Up the Future

A major strength of The Force Awakens inadvertently created a significant weakness: the film heavily relied on nostalgia for the original Star Wars trilogy. While this initially paved the way for exciting new projects, their success depended on having skilled creators at the helm.

One of the strengths of The Force Awakens was how it built upon the best parts of Star Wars to create a fresh and engaging story. The film featured a new enemy that was even more ruthless than the Empire, capable of destroying entire star systems. It also introduced Kylo Ren as a villain – less stable and predictable than Darth Vader, which made him a compelling character.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited by the new heroes in The Force Awakens. Rey was amazing – a strong, mysterious character, and Finn was a total game-changer as the first-ever defector from the First Order who quickly became vital to the Resistance. But honestly, looking back, the movie also kicked off some debates. It felt a little too reliant on the original trilogy, almost retreading the same ground as A New Hope. It wasn’t a bad thing necessarily, but it was noticeable! They even mirrored key moments and even directly referenced lines from the very first film, which some fans found a bit much.

Lor San Tekka’s Force Awaken’s Quote Was a Huge Promise to Star Wars Fans

Lor San Tekka was an ally of the Resistance and a close friend of Leia Organa. Because of this, she asked him to safeguard the map leading to Luke Skywalker. At the beginning of The Force Awakens, he gives this map to Poe Dameron and BB-8, hoping it will help the Resistance and famously saying it should ‘set things right’.

The scene strongly echoes Leia entrusting R2-D2 with the Death Star plans for Obi-Wan, and it probably started as a respectful nod to that moment. However, it’s since become a bit unclear whether it’s an homage or a copy. Beyond what it meant for the characters, Lor San Tekka’s words to Poe Dameron also felt like a direct message to the audience.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve seen the waves of excitement and disappointment over the years. While a lot of people now have a soft spot for the prequels and even the old Expanded Universe stories, there were definitely moments in both that frustrated us. And honestly, when Disney bought Lucasfilm, a lot of us were really worried about where the franchise was headed. It felt like everything we loved was at risk.

It felt like a promise to fix past issues and finally deliver the series where it should be, essentially a verbal agreement about the future of the films. While that turned out to be more difficult than expected, it seemed achievable at the time, especially given the strong sense of nostalgia surrounding the movie. However, as time has passed, Star Wars still needs to fully deliver on that original promise to fans.

Star Wars’ Fate Remains With the Fans Even if the Sequel Trilogy Stumbled

Following The Force Awakens, the newer Star Wars films—and honestly, Disney’s initial vision for the franchise—didn’t quite live up to expectations, despite some successes like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Similar to the reaction to the prequel films, each sequel faced significant criticism and pushback from fans.

Recently, Star Wars has improved thanks to television. With the conclusion of its main storyline and shows like The Mandalorian and Andor exploring new time periods and stories, things are finally heading in a positive direction, as many hoped. Ultimately, however, the future of Star Wars and fulfilling its potential rests with the fans.

With The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars returns to the big screen after a four-year absence, following The Rise of Skywalker. There’s anticipation about how well the film will perform, but the trailers suggest it’s focused on recapturing the classic, enjoyable spirit of Star Wars while still telling a new story.

Considering everything, the line from The Force Awakens might be the most memorable of this era, but 2026 could be when its impact is truly felt. For that to happen, the next film needs to avoid past errors and align with the storytelling of the TV shows. It should focus less on recreating old moments and more on expanding the existing universe to tell fresh stories that can finally address long-standing issues.
