Hellboy Returns In A Thrilling Comic With An Unexpected Storyline

It’s been a long time since fans saw what many consider the definitive live-action version of this character, but we’ll get to that shortly. Although there’s still disappointment about the cancelled Hellboy III, there’s something exciting coming in 2026 related to the character, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics.

The first issue of Young Hellboy: Thrilling Sky Adventures arrives in comic shops on May 20th. This four-part series focuses on Scarlett Santiago, also known as the Sky Devil, a character the young Hellboy greatly admires.

Young Hellboy Makes an Appearance in 2026

Scarlett Santiago is a hero who’s taken down a lot of villains, and now she’s attracting unwanted attention. To protect herself and continue fighting crime, she might have to join forces with a secretive, cat-like ally who shares her mission.

Even though Young Hellboy: Thrilling Sky Adventures is a fun read on its own, it probably won’t satisfy fans still hoping for a third live-action Hellboy movie starring Ron Perlman (known from Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim) to complete the trilogy.

Both the 2019 and 2024 attempts to revive the character were financial failures in theaters. The 2024 film, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, was particularly poorly received by both critics and audiences, earning only $2.1 million worldwide despite costing $20 million to make. This further brought attention back to Ron Perlman’s portrayal of the character.

Will There Be a New Hellboy Movie?

When asked if he’d reprise his iconic Devil costume, Perlman didn’t hesitate to say he absolutely would – and that neither his age (75) nor occasional bladder issues would hold him back.

He enthusiastically confirmed on the Joe Vulpis Podcast in early 2026 that he was approached about a new Hellboy project with David Harbour, but his priority remains completing Hellboy III with the original team. He emphasized the importance of the original filmmakers being involved and jokingly said that if the film isn’t made within five years, he’d be willing to reprise the role even at 80 years old, relying on the costume to hide any physical limitations.

He explained that he felt a responsibility to the fans, a feeling he still holds. He’d even be willing to do another movie now, if someone offered the opportunity. The original plan was for a three-part story. The second film ended with a cliffhanger – a character was pregnant with twins, and the hero hadn’t yet fulfilled his destiny to either save or destroy the world. The third movie would have resolved all of that, bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion, and he believes it really should have been made.

Most fans would agree with Perlman’s view that Hellboy II: The Golden Army ended on a frustrating cliffhanger almost twenty years ago. While everyone waits to see if Hellboy III will ever be made, reading Young Hellboy: Thrilling Sky Adventures could be a good way to pass the time.
