There’s no question that KPop Demon Hunters has been a massive success – it’s become one of Netflix’s most popular original films. Although a sequel is still a ways off, the movie continues to generate buzz. Director Maggie Kang recently shared that her initial ideas for the film were quite different from the final version we all enjoyed.
In an interview with Deadline, creator Ashley Kang shared that her original vision for KPop Demon Hunters was quite different from the final movie. Back in 2018, she imagined a “dark, adult, and very violent” film. However, after six months of development, Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson saw the potential for a franchise and suggested Kang shift towards a more family-friendly approach. While the finished film still includes demons and action, it’s significantly lighter in tone than Kang’s initial concept.
The Origins of Huntrix

During the interview, Maggie emphasized the importance of authentic Asian representation in Huntrix. She explained that the team strived for historical and cultural accuracy, wanting to portray Korea as she knew it, rather than a fictionalized version. Maggie believes it’s harmful to accept simplified or stereotypical depictions of Asian culture and wanted the film to showcase specific Korean details and culture throughout.
Fortunately, Kang also shared some news about the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, which is currently planned for release in 2029. Maggie mentioned she’s aiming for a follow-up that feels new, unexpected, and unique, and that the team is paying close attention to what fans want. The director of the first film explained that fan feedback is helping her and the animators improve their work, emphasizing the importance of quality for a growing franchise. She noted that K-Pop fans are discerning and will quickly notice any shortcomings. While specific plot details are still under wraps, producers have suggested the sequel will give more attention to other members of the K-Pop group, particularly Mira and Zoey, who had less focus in the first film, which centered around Rumi.
