The Sega Genesis arrived just as fighting games were exploding in popularity in arcades. This was great for home console players, because many game developers brought their successful arcade fighting games to the Genesis, allowing them to reach even more people. While not every port was a hit, several became hugely popular. The fighting game genre has evolved a lot since then, but if you want a taste of what it was like growing up with the Genesis in the ’90s and having access to so many great fighting games, the titles below are worth checking out.
Here are five Sega Genesis fighting games that still hold up today.
5) Eternal Champions

I was just discussing how arcade games were brought to the Genesis, but Eternal Champions was different – it was designed specifically for the console from the start. Sega wanted to create its own fighting game to capitalize on the popularity of the genre and offer a home version.
Eternal Champions stands out with its focus on story mode and unique gameplay elements like reflecting projectiles and using a force field. Sega even included a training mode to help players learn the ropes. The game was a success with both critics and players, leading to a sequel and two spin-off titles. If you’re looking for a fighting game designed specifically for the Sega Genesis, Eternal Champions is one of the best choices available.
4) Primal Rage

Primal Rage is a bit unusual because it was primarily designed to promote a line of toys. Similar to many cartoons from the 1980s, the game itself felt like an afterthought to the merchandise. While it’s not necessarily a bad game, it’s important to remember that most of the other titles on this list are generally considered to be of higher quality.
Nothing screams the ’90s quite like dinosaurs battling it out! The core idea is fantastic, and the Genesis version is a really good translation of the arcade game. While playing the original arcade cabinet would be ideal, most reviewers actually thought the Genesis version was superior to the Super Nintendo port. Sadly, a follow-up game never materialized, but Atari did release a novel to continue the story for dedicated fans.
3) Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

Many consider Mortal Kombat 2 the best MK game on the Genesis, but I prefer Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Avoid playing the original MK3 though – it’s missing a lot of characters and key features that make the game great.
Many fans consider Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 the definitive classic MK experience. It includes characters absent from the original game and improves gameplay balance with several updates. Plus, it adds fun new modes like team battles (2-on-2) and an exciting eight-player tournament, making it the best way to enjoy classic Mortal Kombat on the Genesis.
2) Samurai Shodown

SNK’s Samurai Shodown was a groundbreaking fighting game because it emphasized weapon-based combat. While other games featured weapons, SNK consistently delivered high-quality titles in the 1990s. Unfortunately, Sega Genesis owners had to wait a while to play it, and the version they received wasn’t quite as good as the original Neo Geo release.
Even with its flaws, this is still an enjoyable game. It’s missing a character, Earthquake, and her stage, and the lack of a zoom feature means the characters aren’t as detailed as they could be. Most reviewers thought the version for Genesis was better than the one for Super Nintendo, largely because of the Super Nintendo’s clunky controls. However, if you can’t play the arcade or Neo Geo versions, this version of Samurai Shodown is still worth checking out.
1) Street Fighter II: Champion Edition

With several versions available, Street Fighter II is a great place to start if you’re looking for a classic fighting game on the Genesis. It was a huge hit in arcades and sold incredibly well on home consoles, and remains one of the best fighting games ever made.
If you’re looking for the best version, I recommend Champion Edition. It includes four new playable characters and allows for head-to-head matches with the same character. Capcom also refined the game’s balance, making it a great choice for competitive players. Like most Street Fighter games from that time, it was very popular with both critics and players, easily earning its place at the top of this list.
