Tiny Onion and James Tynion IV are continuing their successful streak with a new comic book series from Dark Horse Comics. Called Beast of Borikén, it’s a scary and exciting tropical horror story that offers a fresh take on the legend of the Chupacabra. The series boasts a fantastic creative team, and we’ve got all the exclusive details for you right now.
The latest installment in the True Weird series is Beast of Borikén, a new story brought to life by Emmy-nominated writer Julio Anta (known for Home, Frontera, and This Land is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story), artist Daniel Irizarri (Xino, Cemetery Kids Don’t Die), colorist Patricio Delpeche (TexArcanum, Minor Arcana), and letterer Lucas Gattoni (Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers, Absolute Green Lantern). The story follows Loli Flores as she uncovers the truth about the el Chupacabra – it’s not just a legend, but a 500-year-old protector of the island and its people.

Beast of Borikén Reimagines The Chupacabra

Most people are familiar with legends and stories about mysterious creatures like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Now, Beast of Borikén explores a lesser-known legend, bringing this creature’s story to life in a fresh way. The story kicks off when a strange, supernatural event interrupts the start of a new city project, and Loli quickly discovers there’s a deeper reason behind the event and why it happened at this particular time.

As a huge fan of classic monster movies, I’m really excited about my new book, Beast of Borikén. It’s a tropical horror story that blends a sweeping, 500-year saga of colonialism and rebellion with a really personal, intense character drama. And at the heart of it all is the Chupacabra – but not like you’ve ever seen before! I’ve aimed to make this creature truly terrifying, but also surprisingly human. Plus, the artwork by Daniel Irizarri is incredible – I think readers are going to love it, and maybe even be a little scared!
Irizarri shared that Beast of Borikén was a deeply personal project, allowing him to portray the people and spirit of his island as he knows it – with all their complexities and emotions. He praised Tiny Onion for being willing to try something new with their True Weird series, and highlighted how Julio’s story powerfully represents Puerto Rican resilience. He was thrilled to contribute his artistic vision to a story that blends modern horror with the island’s history, myths, and a fresh take on the Chupacabra, all centered around themes of protest and vengeful spirits.
The first issue of Beast of Borikén (a 5-part series) will be released in comic shops on July 1, 2026, and you can pre-order it now at your local store.
