It’s common for characters in Power Rangers to begin as villains before switching sides and helping the other Rangers, and often, they don’t have a choice in the matter. Whether through magic, mind control, or corrupted power sources, these characters get more complex storylines. This happened 23 years ago with one villain who ultimately became a strong ally to the Power Rangers.
The Power Rangers Wild Force episode “The Lone Wolf,” which aired on May 18, 2002, focuses on Merrick Baliton. Previously, Merrick had fought against the Wild Force Rangers while under the curse of the Zen-Aku mask. In this episode, Merrick breaks free from the curse, but initially struggles with guilt and doesn’t immediately join the team. However, with the aid of the Red Lion Zord and receiving his own Ranger Morpher, he transforms into the Lunar Wolf Ranger and becomes a valuable ally to the Power Rangers.
Power Rangers’ Lone Wolf Episode Features a Long-Awaited Hero Turn
Throughout most of the episode, Merrick is deeply upset about the things he did while Zen-Aku controlled him, and that’s why he’s hesitant to join the Rangers. He feels too guilty and focuses on trying to repair the damage he caused. However, without his powers, he’s unable to defeat Master Org.
Merrick attempts to summon the Wild Zords, but they don’t answer. Just when it seems like he’s defeated, the Red Lion Zord responds, bringing the other Zords back. Along with them, the Animal Crystals and Lunar Caller Morpher reappear, transforming Merrick into the Lunar Wolf Ranger. With his newfound abilities, he finally defeats Quadra Org.
Merrick reclaims his Wild Zords and creates the Predators, helping the Power Rangers defeat the massive Quadra Org. He then defeats Nayzor and recovers the Animal Crystals, forming an alliance with the Rangers. This partnership lasts until Merrick chooses to embark on a new journey, joining forces with Zen-Aku, who is also seeking a fresh start and a chance at redemption.
