Under Suspicion: Kate McCann true story – how accurate is the 5 drama?

The case of Madeleine McCann, a young girl who disappeared in 2007, remains one of the most widely discussed missing child cases in the world.

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been widely covered in the news and featured in many documentaries. Now, Channel 5 is presenting a new drama, ‘Under Suspicion: Kate McCann,’ which takes a fresh look at the case by focusing on the investigation and questioning of Madeleine’s mother, Kate.

The investigation, as shown in the series, put a lot of pressure on Portuguese detectives to find the person responsible, and Kate quickly became the main suspect.

After being questioned for eleven hours, Kate learns she’s about to be formally named a suspect. The police are pushing for a confession, and if she doesn’t give one, they may accuse her of murdering her daughter.

I’ve been following the case of Madeleine McCann for years, and I’m really curious about what truly happened to Kate McCann. I just finished watching the new drama, and I wanted to see how accurately it depicted the events – so I did some digging to find out.

Under Suspicion: Kate McCann true story – How accurate is the 5 drama?

The new five-part drama recreates the police interview with Kate McCann, showing what is thought to have occurred during her questioning by Portuguese authorities.

To create authentic scripts for the show, the writers relied on actual interrogation records. Philip Ralph, the writer, explained to 5 that a major difficulty was the fact that Portuguese police (the Policia Judicaria) didn’t record the audio of their 2007 interview with Kate McCann.

Instead, a member of their team carefully recorded the interview in Portuguese, and then translated it into English for Kate McCann to review and approve after it finished.

The most difficult part was writing the conversations. We needed to make sure the questions from the Portuguese police felt realistic and matched their investigation, while also ensuring Kate’s responses were completely accurate based on the official record and what actually happened. After that, everything had to be carefully translated back into Portuguese for the actors playing the police officers. It was a really detailed and slow process.

When discussing his approach to writing the play, he explained that he aimed for a precise, simple, and direct storytelling style. His goal was to encourage the audience to set aside any preconceived notions and experience the story anew, seeing it through Kate’s perspective as fellow humans, parents, and children. He wanted viewers to consider how they themselves would cope if faced with similar circumstances – how they would react, survive, and maintain hope.

The case brought against the McCanns was completely unfounded and quickly collapsed, leading to a public apology after just a year. Despite this, they continue to be subjected to false claims and accusations, making it incredibly difficult to move forward with their lives and continue their search for Madeleine.

Nat Lippiett, head of programmes at Orchard Studios and executive producer, explained that the team had access to compelling source material for the drama. He emphasized the significant responsibility of accurately portraying the essence of the events, even if not every detail could be replicated exactly. Given the extensive media coverage of the Madeleine McCann investigation, he said they felt a strong justification was needed before revisiting the case.

We solved the case by concentrating on a significant, yet often overlooked, human element that hadn’t been thoroughly explored. This key discovery highlights universal themes like distrust, blame, gossip, sorrow, and the fairness of the legal process.

Were the McCanns considered suspects in Madeleine’s disappearance?

Madeleine vanished at the age of 3 while on vacation with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on the evening of May 3, 2007.

The investigation quickly became a major focus for the British media, receiving widespread coverage. However, the tone of the reporting began to change in June, turning attention towards Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry.

At a press conference in Berlin on June 6, 2007, a reporter questioned the couple about their possible involvement in their daughter’s disappearance. Later that month, the Portuguese magazine Sol published a lengthy, 3,000-word article claiming the McCanns were suspects in the case.

Kate and Gerry McCann have consistently maintained their innocence in Madeleine’s disappearance. However, the media in both Portugal and the UK published many unsubstantiated articles suggesting they were involved.

In September 2007, Portuguese police (the PJ) named both Gerry and Kate McCann as official suspects. The police suggested Madeleine might have accidentally died in the apartment. Kate later stated that she was offered a reduced sentence if she admitted to covering up her daughter’s death.

During Kate’s interview with authorities, she answered only a single question before exercising her right to remain silent, following her lawyer’s guidance.

The police investigation was closed on July 21, 2008, because they couldn’t find any evidence connecting the McCanns to Madeleine’s disappearance. As a result, the McCanns were no longer considered suspects.

Kate explained that it was incredibly upsetting to be labeled as suspects and then presented that way in the media, especially considering their daughter had been abducted.

It’s been heartbreaking to see how this situation has hindered the efforts to find Madeleine.

Clarence Mitchell, who spoke on behalf of the McCanns at the time, stated that while they felt some relief, they weren’t celebrating. He emphasized that they should never have been considered suspects in the first place, and the fact that no charges were filed supports that view.

In 2023, Panorama revealed that high-ranking Portuguese police officers went to London to offer the McCanns an apology for their handling of the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance and how they were treated throughout the process.

Under Suspicion: Kate McCann premieres on Wednesday 20 May at 9pm on 5.
