Rick and Morty movie officially confirmed by creator Dan Harmon – with fan-favourite director helming it

After years of speculation, a Rick and Morty movie is officially in the works. Dan Harmon, one of the show’s creators, recently announced they’ve found a director to lead the film.

Rick and Morty is an animated show that began as a funny take on the movie Back to the Future. It centers on Rick, a brilliant but eccentric grandfather, and his patient grandson, Morty, as they embark on crazy adventures. Over time, more of their family has gotten involved in these journeys.

I have to admit, this show was everywhere for a while – a total pop culture phenomenon in its early seasons. But things definitely took a turn after season six. A controversy surrounding co-creator and star Justin Roiland led to him being removed from the project, and honestly, it really impacted the show’s standing with fans. It’s hard to ignore that shift in perception.

Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden now voice the characters of Rick and Morty. They join the existing cast, which includes Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer.

The group is now ready to continue their roles in a movie, and according to Dan Harmon, rumors about a larger franchise are true.

Dan Harmon revealed that Jacob Hair will direct the upcoming Rick and Morty movie. Hair has been a key part of the show since season 4, directing the episode ‘The Vat of Acid Episode,’ as well as the season 5 and 6 premieres, ‘Mort Dinner Rick Andre’ and ‘Solaricks’.

“We didn’t look at other options,” Harmon went on. “He’s truly exceptional—calling him a ‘rock star’ doesn’t quite capture it, because that suggests a fleeting moment of fame. Jacob has real staying power. When he joined our team, it felt like we’d added a fundamental support, making us much stronger.”

It’s still unknown if the upcoming Rick and Morty movie will play in theaters or be released directly on HBO Max, which just became available in the UK after a considerable delay.

Turning animated TV shows into movies has been hit or miss. “The Simpsons Movie” was a big success in 2007, earning over $500 million, but “Bob’s Burgers” didn’t do well when it tried in 2022.

In 2023, Dan Harmon shared with The Hollywood Reporter his ideas for a Rick and Morty movie.

He explained his approach would be to create something like a Rick and Morty episode, but expand it into a full-length, 90-minute experience with a bigger budget.

The goal wasn’t to force a dramatic, important feel, but simply to create an incredibly awesome Rick and Morty episode.

Even though Dan Harmon isn’t directing, he’s expected to be a producer, meaning his creative ideas will likely still influence the show. While we wait for more, season 9 of Rick and Morty will be available on HBO Max next month.
