God of War 3 Director’s AAA Dungeons & Dragons Game Cancelled After Less Than a Year

A major Dungeons & Dragons project, first revealed about a year ago, has been cancelled, Bloomberg reports.

The game was a solo action-adventure title led by Stig Asmussen, a well-known developer who previously directed games like God of War 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Given his experience, the project clearly had a lot of promise.

Why did Hasbro decide to stop working with Asmussen and his team at Giant Skull, the company he started last year?

Basically, the company wanted to cut expenses. Even though they initially approved this Dungeons & Dragons project, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast decided to cancel it after realizing it wasn’t financially viable. They had already begun restructuring other parts of the company as well.

A Wizards representative said they chose not to move forward with an initial idea from Giant Skull, but they highly regard Stig Asmussen and his team and continue to have a strong working relationship with them.

Man, I’m really curious to see what Giant Skull does next. They landed a huge project right away, so I’m guessing their next game is going to be pretty ambitious too.

Ultimately, it’s just a shame that we didn’t get to see this one in action.

Wizards of the Coast is also developing more video games. One upcoming title, called Exodus, is a science fiction RPG similar to Mass Effect and is planned for release on PlayStation 5 in 2027.
