Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been out on some systems for a bit, and now it’s launching on Xbox Series X|S and the new Nintendo Switch 2. Today, we’re taking a close look at the Xbox version, as it includes a lot of cool features and improvements. We’ll cover visual enhancements, performance settings, cross-platform advantages, bonus content, and fifteen key things you should know about the game on Microsoft’s Xbox.
Standalone Second Entry in a Remake Trilogy
Released in 2024, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game in a planned three-part remake of the classic 1997 RPG. The game continues the story of Cloud Strife and his team as they leave Midgar and journey towards The Forgotten Capital. If you haven’t played the first game, don’t worry – Rebirth is designed to be enjoyed on its own, and you won’t miss out on the overall experience. The developers have expanded the story enough that you can jump right in!
Mix of Real-Time and Turn-Based Combat
Compared to the original 1997 game, which had strictly turn-based battles, the Remake trilogy blends real-time action with the classic three-character party system. Rebirth improves upon Remake, making combat smoother and quicker – you’ll see characters using more aerial moves, and many helpful abilities are now part of their regular attacks. Blocking and parrying not only reduce damage but also build up points used for powerful special abilities, magic, and items. While there’s a learning curve, FF7 Rebirth’s combat is accessible to players of all skill levels – you can keep it simple or dive into more complex strategies.
Synergy Abilities Unlock Your Potential
To really excel in Rebirth’s combat, you’ll need to use Synergy Abilities – special attacks where two characters combine their skills for even greater power. These are especially effective when your opponent is Staggered. Rebirth features an improved Synergy system, and a new Party Levelling System lets you upgrade your entire team at once, making them work better together and boosting their combined abilities.
Xbox Version Launches with Streamlined Progression
If you’re having trouble with the battles in Rebirth, want to focus on the story, or dislike repetitive grinding, the new Streamlined Progression mode – available with the Xbox version – will make combat much easier. When enabled, every attack will do massive damage, and your resources like magic points, health, and special attack gauges will stay full. You’ll also have unlimited access to Limit Breaks – powerful special moves usually earned through combat or specific actions.
Enhanced Visual Modes on Xbox Series X

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Xbox Series X has different graphics options. The best-looking mode aims for 4K resolution and focuses on detailed environments, sharper characters, and overall visual quality. However, this mode doesn’t always run at a smooth 60 frames per second. If you prioritize a consistent frame rate, a Performance Mode is also available.
VRR Support and SSD Optimisation
One of the best things about this game is how smooth it runs, thanks to a feature called Variable Refresh Rate. It really helps when things get visually busy! Plus, because it’s built for the Xbox Series X|S and uses the super-fast SSD, loading times are seriously quick. I can zip around the huge open world – whether I’m fast traveling or riding my Chocobo – without waiting forever. It makes exploring so much more fun!
Spatial Audio and HDR10 Support
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Xbox Series X|S doesn’t just look great – it sounds amazing too, with full support for Xbox Spatial Sound. This technology creates immersive 3D audio, letting you pinpoint the location of enemies and feel more connected to the game world. You can experience this with the free Windows Sonic, or upgrade to Dolby Atmos or DTS Sound Unbound for an even more detailed soundscape. The game also supports HDR10, which improves the contrast, brightness, and colors. All these features combined create a richer and more dynamic experience for players on Xbox Series X|S.
Supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Cross-Save
With Xbox Play Anywhere, buying the digital version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth lets you play it on both your Xbox console and PC without paying extra. Plus, you can easily continue your game wherever you are – switch between your console and PC, and your progress will be saved and ready to go!
Returning Remake Players Can Access Exclusive Bonuses
If you previously played Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Xbox or PC and have a save file, you’ll receive special bonuses for the Leviathan summon in Rebirth. You won’t find this bonus while playing the game; it’s accessed through the DLC menu. It’s worth getting, as Leviathan is a strong summon. Plus, if you completed the Episode INTERmission DLC featuring Yuffie and have a save file for it, you can also unlock another Summon Materia.
Xbox Velocity Architecture Support

Both the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles will use Xbox Velocity Architecture to speed up storage and data loading. This helps reduce long loading times by freeing up the console’s processing power. Combined with optimizations within the game itself, like its use of SSD storage, this technology allows for faster and smoother exploration of the game world, which is especially important in Rebirth due to its large, explorable environments.
Series X vs Series S Differences
Both the Xbox Series X and Series S offer the complete FF7 Rebirth experience, but there are some technical differences. The Series X aims for better graphics and smoother gameplay with its Graphics and Performance modes. The Series S generally runs at a lower resolution – around 1440p at 30 frames per second with enhanced graphics, or 1080p at 60 frames per second for faster performance. The Series S also has a “Balanced” mode that tries to find a good compromise between visual quality and speed, targeting around 800p at 60 frames per second, though the frame rate isn’t always consistent. This gives players more options for how they want to play.
Digital Deluxe Edition Overview
The Digital Deluxe Edition of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth comes with the full game and extra downloadable content like special summoning items, a unique necklace, and a new armor piece. It also includes digital artbooks. Considering the small price increase over the standard version, the Deluxe Edition might be a good value for players.
Release Date, Price, and Pre-Order Bonuses
The highly anticipated game Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be available on Xbox Series X|S starting June 3rd. The standard version costs $49.99, while the Deluxe Edition is priced at $64.99. Pre-ordering offers some benefits, including a 20% discount in the Xbox store before launch, plus exclusive bonus content: the Moogle Trio and Posh Chocobo Summoning Materia, along with the Shinra and Midgar Bangle Mk II armor.
No Game Pass Plans

Currently, FF7 Rebirth isn’t planned to be added to Xbox Game Pass. But, a pre-order discount is available if you want to buy it when it releases. It’s still possible the game will come to Game Pass in the future, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
Free Demo With Transferable Progress
Still on the fence? You can try a free demo of the game through the Xbox online store. It lets you play a part of the beginning without buying it. Plus, if you play the demo, you can carry your progress over to the full game. And if you finish the entire demo, you’ll get a special Kupo Charm and some helpful items like potions and ethers as a reward.
