Reaction: Sony’s Big State of Play Must Deliver as PS5 Perception Sinks to an All-Time Low

The PlayStation console has had a mixed run this generation, with things becoming particularly challenging in the last two years.

It’s widely agreed that Sony has been facing challenges recently. Public opinion of PlayStation, and the PS5 in particular, has become increasingly negative due to a series of issues.

Essentially, Sony appears to have had trouble understanding what its core audience wants this generation, which has caused significant frustration among dedicated fans.

Just to be clear, the PlayStation 5 has been a big win for the company, generally speaking.

As a PlayStation fan, I have to say, the PS5 has really knocked it out of the park! Considering how tough it was to launch a new console with everything going on in the world – supply chain issues and production delays were a nightmare – it’s amazing how well it’s actually done. I’m seriously impressed!

The PlayStation Store is still incredibly successful, bringing in more revenue for Sony than ever before.

However, it’s possible that the company’s moderate achievements have prevented it from recognizing serious problems within its collection of games.

The company’s attempt to create a continuously updated, live service game has been a major failure, and it’s likely the biggest reason why so many fans are disappointed.

Over the past few years, it’s seemed like Sony has focused more on following the latest trends than on understanding what its dedicated fans really want.

That’s why I’m really looking forward to the next State of Play. It’s basically PlayStation’s main event this summer, since E3 is no longer happening. It’s the biggest gaming news we’ll get from them for a while.

Xbox is also holding a gaming event, scheduled just a few days after Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest. However, this State of Play presentation is happening even sooner, on June 2nd.

It’s worth remembering we’ve seen this situation before, actually just a few months ago. The State of Play event in February had a lot of hype around it, and it delivered – it was really good, with a ton of exciting announcements and reveals.

Here’s my point: even Sony’s best presentation, the recent State of Play, wasn’t enough to change things. Shortly after, the negative sentiment surrounding PlayStation returned, impacting discussions on everything related to the brand.

Look, as a big Sony fan, I’m really hoping this new show delivers! They need to impress people again, and honestly, it’s looking good so far. The fact that they’ve got Marvel’s Wolverine confirmed as a main attraction, and that the whole presentation is going to be over an hour long, is a really promising sign. Fingers crossed it’s amazing!

I don’t want to worry anyone, but what if we received a major Fairgames update right in the middle of the broadcast?

Honestly, whenever anyone even mentions that live service game, the reaction is just… negative. It’s the kind of thing that would totally kill the vibe of any presentation. And even if, somehow, they showed it looking amazing, I think the bad reputation has already done it in. It’s just too late.

Concord is a major reason for the current negative feelings towards PlayStation. While things like price increases have contributed to the problem, a lot of the criticism stems from the unsuccessful launch and overall failure of the Concord project.

Even an appearance from Horizon Hunters Gathering would go down like a lead balloon at this point.

Honestly, I really believe there’s a world out there where everyone’s loving Guerrilla Games’ co-op game – a world where people are blown away by how beautiful it looks and completely trust that the studio knows what they’re doing. It just feels like that world should exist!

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to gain traction due to PlayStation’s struggling efforts with ongoing live service games. It’s a harsh reality, but this issue stems from decisions made by the platform itself.

Let me say it again: this State of Play is crucial. Sony needs it to be a success if they want to break their current pattern of disappointing announcements. It has to give PlayStation 5 owners something genuinely exciting to look forward to as we approach the end of this console generation.

I’m hopeful Wolverine will be impressive – I have faith in Insomniac Games to deliver something amazing – but a presentation promising over an hour of gameplay needs to really stand out.

This has always been the case, even going back to the E3 era, but currently Sony is facing rising costs for its hardware, and its in-house game studios are having trouble delivering strong results halfway through the console’s lifespan. On top of that, many believe Sony’s leadership is uncertain about the future.

It’s time to put up or shut up.
