Gambit first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1990, where he saved Storm, who had lost her memory, from the Shadow King’s followers. His appealing personality and southern gentlemanly style, combined with a mysterious background, quickly made him popular with fans. After the X-Men animated series launched in the 1990s, his popularity soared, reaching the same level as iconic characters like Wolverine. Many of his comic book stories explore his history as a member of a thieves’ guild, a difficult past involving Mr. Sinister and the Marauders, and a long-standing rivalry with Rogue. Throughout his time as a hero, Gambit evolved into a capable leader, though he faced challenges and made mistakes along the way.
Featuring work by renowned writers like Chris Claremont, Fabian Nicieza, Jeph Loeb, James Asmus, Kelly Thompson, Peter Milligan, and Tini Howard, this is a collection of the greatest Gambit stories ever published by Marvel Comics.
10) “Bishop’s Crossing”

As a huge X-Men fan, one storyline that always stuck with me is “Bishop’s Crossing,” which originally ran in Uncanny X-Men issues #281 through #288 back in ’91 and ’92. This is where we first meet Bishop, a mutant who’s traveled back in time from a future where the X-Men have been wiped out – betrayed by someone on the inside. He comes to our timeline determined to find this traitor and get revenge, and he’s convinced it’s Gambit. Honestly, this story is what really kicked off the whole ‘is Gambit the X-Traitor?’ mystery that ran for years! It wasn’t until the ‘Onslaught’ storyline that everything finally came to light. Looking back, it really highlights how Gambit always felt like an outsider, even when fighting alongside the X-Men.
9) Knights of X

Published in 2022, Knights of X is a five-part comic series set within the larger Krakoa era, continuing the story from the Excalibur series. The story follows Gambit as he joins forces with Captain Britain, Rictor, Shatterstar, Rachel Summers, Gloriana, and Bei the Blood Moon to reclaim Otherworld from a villainous Merlyn and King Arthur. A major event in the series is Gambit’s death, which creates a powerful emotional impact because it occurs in Otherworld, making him seemingly ineligible for resurrection.
8) Wolverine/Gambit: Victims

Throughout the 1990s, Gambit became as popular as Wolverine, and in 1995, the two characters starred together in a four-part comic series written by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale—the same creative team behind DC’s The Long Halloween. The story centers on Gambit investigating murders in London, with clues suggesting Wolverine is responsible. This sets up a fight between them, but they eventually join forces to uncover the real villains: Arcade and Martinique. This storyline was unique for Gambit, as it presented him as a detective and gave him one of his first major roles alongside a well-established hero like Wolverine.
7) Gambit and the X-Ternals

Published in 1995 as a four-part series during the “Age of Apocalypse” event, Gambit and the X-Ternals presents an alternate reality where Gambit leads a team of thieves and misfits – including Lila Cheney, Strong Guy, Jubilee, and Sunspot. Tasked by Magneto, the X-Ternals attempt to steal a piece of the powerful M’Kraan Crystal to fix reality. This story stands out from typical Gambit tales by taking him into space for a conflict with the Shi’ar Empire, showcasing his determination and leadership skills.
6) Mr. & Mrs. X

Published between 2018 and 2019, Mr. & Mrs. X is a 12-issue comic series featuring Gambit and Rogue, and it began after their unexpected wedding in X-Men Gold #30. The story sends the newlywed couple on an interstellar honeymoon where they must protect a strange egg. They’re pursued by various groups, including the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, the Starjammers, Technet, and Deathbird, and even get a surprise visit from Deadpool. It’s eventually revealed that the egg contains the genetically engineered child of Professor X and Lilandra. This adventure moved Gambit out of his solitary role and strengthened his position as a key member of the X-Men.
5) Gambit Vol. 5

Published in 2012, Gambit Vol. 3 was a 17-issue comic series that was part of the “Marvel NOW!” initiative. It brought Gambit back to his roots as a skilled thief after a break from the X-Men. The story centers around a major heist, which puts the Cajun hero in a thrilling situation. Things get complicated when an alien object becomes bonded to his chest, leading to conflicts with both ancient alien gods and the Tombstone crime family. Eventually, he’s recruited by MI:13 to find a magical artifact. This series emphasized that, at heart, Gambit is a thief before anything else.
4) Gambit Vol. 3

First published in 1999, this ongoing Gambit series was Marvel’s attempt to capitalize on the character’s rising popularity. It’s a key series for understanding Gambit’s backstory, particularly his connections to the Assassins’ Guild and the Thieves Guild of New Orleans. The story begins with Gambit taking on seemingly impossible missions, only to then become the target of every assassin in the Marvel Universe, thanks to a mysterious benefactor. This series is essential reading for anyone interested in Gambit, as it explores his leadership within the Thieves’ Guild, the origins of his powers – which are linked to a surgical procedure performed by Mr. Sinister – and the motivations behind his personal ethics.
3) Uncanny X-Men #266

Gambit first officially appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266 in 1990, created by Chris Claremont and Mike Collins. The story featured Storm, who had lost her memory, in Cairo, Illinois, and Gambit stepped in to save her from enemies controlled by the Shadow King. This introduction established him as a secretive thief with a heroic side, setting the stage for his growing popularity over the next ten years. This initial appearance influenced all future Gambit storylines, from the revelations about the Marauders to his relationship with Rogue and his own independent adventures. It was the beginning of everything for the character.
2) “Blood of Apocalypse”

Gambit hit rock bottom in 2006 during the “Blood of Apocalypse” storyline. Following the fallout from “Decimation” and a breakup with Rogue, he reluctantly agreed to become Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death. Secretly, Gambit intended to play both sides, but he soon discovered the transformation was stripping away his identity and free will. As one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, alongside Sunfire and Polaris, he attacked the X-Men and attempted to kill Rogue. By the end of the story, Gambit had become genuinely evil. After Apocalypse’s defeat, Mr. Sinister brought Gambit back to his former self, but this came with a price – a debt to Sinister and membership in the Marauders.
1) “The Trial of Gambit”

The storyline “The Trial of Gambit” dramatically changed the character, turning him from a respected X-Men member into an outcast. Running from issues #347-350 of Uncanny X-Men (1997), it centered on the X-Men putting Gambit on trial for his involvement in the Mutant Massacre. Archangel, who was originally injured in that attack, spoke in his defense. Ultimately, Rogue absorbed Gambit’s memories, revealing that he had gathered the Marauders for Mr. Sinister, intending only to help control his powers, and led them to the Morlocks without knowing their violent plans. This story is considered the most defining moment in Gambit’s history, showcasing the deep guilt he’d always felt.
