The Super Mario Galaxy Movie characters, Toad and Peach, could be soaring into a new spinoff.
Super Mario Galaxy is the newest movie in the Super Mario series and is currently the top-earning film of 2026. Following the success of the 2023 movie, a sequel is already planned for release around 2029, though reviews have been mixed – with critics and audiences disagreeing on its quality.
Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, recently spoke with ScreenRant about potential spin-off movies focusing on Donkey Kong or Toad. While he doesn’t have any concrete information about those projects, he expressed enthusiasm for the idea and hinted that there are still many possibilities to explore within the film’s universe.
Check out Key’s full comments below:
I’m not sure what’s happening with that right now, but I’d be really excited if we could focus on a Toad-centered project – that would be fantastic! I’m not familiar with the plans for Donkey Kong, but I’d definitely be on board with anything we do. There’s so much more story to tell in this world. I especially think exploring Princess Peach’s backstory – how she grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom and the history of the ongoing conflict between the Mushroom people and the Koopas – would be amazing. It feels like there’s a lot of potential there.
There’s a lot of speculation about which Super Mario character might get their own game next, but Nintendo isn’t making any firm commitments. While Donkey Kong has been a popular guess, the addition of new characters means there’s no clear plan for what comes next.
Toad is a core character in the Mario series. He’s Princess Peach’s steadfast helper and a long-time friend to Mario, and he’s inspired many different characters over the years. We’ve seen a wide variety of Toads, including Toadsworth, Toadette, Captain Toad, and the members of the Toad Brigade.
Considering how well The Super Mario Bros. Movie did, it’s likely we’ll see more movies based on the Mario universe. As producer Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri mentioned, there’s a lot of unexplored backstory and potential in this world. Characters like Toad share similarities with others, and exploring Princess Peach and the Koopa family’s histories could be a fantastic way to expand the story.
Key is a leading comedic actor who has made Toad a fully developed and endearing character. Toad used to be known for his squeaky, sometimes irritating voice, but Key explained to IGN that he found his voice by imagining he was speaking after inhaling helium. He literally used his imagination, telling himself, “I am sucking on a helium balloon,” to achieve the sound he wanted.
Keegan-Michael Key is a highly accomplished comedian with a fantastic background. He honed his skills at Second City and was a featured performer on Mad TV. He’s best known as the co-creator of the hit show Key & Peele, but he’s also a prolific voice actor, lending his talents to films like the 2019 The Lion King, Migration, Transformers One, and Toy Story 4. Beyond television and film, Key has also graced the stage, appearing in Steve Martin’s play Meteor Shower on Broadway in 2017 and delivering a memorable performance as Horatio in a Public Theater Off-Broadway production of Hamlet alongside Oscar Isaac.
Nintendo is planning to make more movies! Following the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda on April 30th, 2027, and rumors of a new Donkey Kong film, the company has a wealth of popular characters like Toad and Peach, and numerous worlds to draw from, opening up possibilities for many future spinoff movies.
You can now watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie on demand through services like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. It will also be available to stream on Peacock this summer.
