Why The Boys Series Finale Changed Butcher & Homelander’s Fates From The Comics

Now that The Boys has finished, creator Eric Kripke discussed some differences between the show and the original comic books. In an interview with Collider, he explained why the fight between Homelander and Butcher wasn’t exactly as it happened in the comics.

There are definitely echoes of the comic book’s Homelander-Butcher storyline in the show, like the Oval Office scene and the use of a crowbar. However, the comic reveals Homelander wasn’t the true villain – he was manipulated, and Black Noir was the real antagonist. While fans had mixed reactions, I personally didn’t find that ending satisfying. After following Antony Starr’s performance for so many seasons, it felt anticlimactic to learn his character hadn’t actually committed the actions he believed he had, and that it was all Noir – his clone – instead. That’s why I decided to go in a different direction with the show.

In terms of the conflict between Butcher and Hughie, he said to TheWrap:

According to showrunner Eric Kripke, the creative team decided against killing off all members of ‘The Boys.’ They felt it wouldn’t be right for Hughie to be the sole survivor. Kripke explained that with a TV series, you build a connection with the audience and can’t simply eliminate beloved characters without a good reason. They made a commitment to viewers not to do that.
