Jack Ryan: Ghost War ending explained: What’s next for Jack Ryan?

John Krasinski is back as CIA agent Jack Ryan in a new movie, following the successful TV series based on Tom Clancy’s books, which ended three years ago.

This isn’t the first time the character has been featured in a movie; actors like Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford have previously played the role, originally created by Tom Clancy. The film is currently available to stream on Prime Video.

But this is actually the very first movie featuring this version of the character – the one we all got to know and love over four seasons, from 2018 to 2023. As a fan, it’s cool to see where things go after the show ended!

The movie follows Jack, who is pulled out of retirement by the CIA to assist his former colleagues. They’re facing a serious danger: a renegade special operations team led by Liam Crown (Max Beesley), who is driven by revenge.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War didn’t receive very positive reviews – we gave it two stars and called it a fairly generic TV movie. However, if you enjoy the Jack Ryan series, you might still find it worthwhile.

If you’ve seen the movie and want a breakdown of the ending, or are curious about what happens to the main character next, here’s an explanation of the Jack Ryan: Ghost War finale.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War ending explained: How do they get the better of Project Starling?

The movie centers on Jack and his team as they attempt to defeat Project Starling, a once-helpful counter-terrorism program that has become dangerous and gone off the rails.

Liam Crown heads the network, but what started as a good idea quickly became risky and unethical under his leadership. This ultimately led to its closure by James Greer (Wendell Pierce), the CIA deputy director who originally helped establish it.

So, things are really heating up. Crown’s back online and is clearly after Greer, which is why I’m being pulled into this mess. I’m working to stop him, and eventually team up with this MI6 agent, Emma Marlowe – Sienna Miller, she’s great – and slowly but surely, I start to realize I can actually rely on her. It’s a classic setup, but it’s working for me!

After several unexpected developments – like learning that Emma’s boss at MI6, Andrew Spear (JJ Feild), was actually a traitor working against them – everything culminates in a final showdown in Dubai.

They’re trying to finish the job that Nigel Cooke (Douglas Hodge) started, but couldn’t complete because he died in the film’s opening scene.

Nigel discovered everything about Crown’s operation and intended to reveal it publicly. Jack and Emma take on the case, aided by Patrick, a technology expert from the CIA connected to Adam Bernett. However, Crown is aware of Nigel’s plans and has sent numerous people to stop him.

Jack and Emma managed to sneak into the building under attack to reach the servers they needed, and Jack successfully retrieved the data. Unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly – Emma was shot and wounded by Crown during the operation.

Fortunately, the heroes succeed in the final showdown. Greer shows up in a helicopter and takes out Crown’s forces, and Jack manages to kill the villain. The mission is a success!

What’s next for Jack Ryan: will there be another film?

The movie concludes with Greer being named the new CIA director, and he immediately chooses Jack as his second-in-command. As they begin their new jobs together, it’s clear the film leaves the door open for future stories if audiences want them.

It’s definitely a possibility! John Krasinski recently shared with ScreenRant that he’s eager to continue the film series, explaining that changing the format allows for new and different stories, and that they still have plenty of ideas to explore.

It remains to be seen what future storylines might emerge, and whether the show Ghost War does well enough on Prime Video to warrant them. We’ll share any official news as soon as we have it.
