‘No Comment’: Darksiders Publisher Refuses to Explain $10 PS5 Upgrade Charge That’s Free on Xbox

As of May 21st, 2026, THQ Nordic, the publisher of Darksiders, has addressed concerns about the different prices PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players are being charged to upgrade to the latest version of the Warmastered Edition.

THQ Nordic has declined to discuss the matter. When asked for a statement, a PR representative simply said they had “no comment.”

So, like I mentioned earlier this week, I think the reason the upgrade options are different is because Sony isn’t raising the price of the PS4 version. That means if you’re just jumping in as a new player and want the PS5 version right now, you’re actually getting a better deal than if you were buying it on Xbox. It’s kinda cool, actually!

It’s still unclear why players who already own the Warmastered Edition on PlayStation 4 have to pay $10 to upgrade to the newer version.

A surprise PS5 upgrade has been released for Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, which originally started as a PS3 game and was then remastered for PS4. While the upgrade includes improvements and updates, players who already own the PS4 version will need to purchase the PS5 version separately to access them.

Even though Microsoft offers a free upgrade path from the Xbox One to the newer Xbox Series X|S consoles, some players still face challenges.

PlayStation 4 owners can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version of the game for $10, which unlocks improved graphics in 4K resolution, a Photo Mode for capturing in-game moments, and compatibility with the PS5 DualSense controller’s unique features.

The way PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S handle upgrades for the game Darksiders differs because of how much the older PS4 version still costs. PlayStation is keeping the PS4 version at $20, but the new PS5 version costs $30. Xbox, however, is raising the price of the Xbox One version to $30, making it the same price as the Xbox Series X|S version.

As a fan, here’s how I see it: if the PS4 version stays the same price and they offer a free upgrade to the PS5 version, it just makes more sense to get the PS5 one! Basically, if you’re buying the game now for the first time, you’re paying the same amount either way.

However, the ones losing out are the current PS4 owners looking to upgrade.

Players who already have the game need to pay $10 to upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. This upgrade is free on Xbox.

I’ve contacted THQ Nordic for more details, but here’s the original statement they made in their press release:

PlayStation 4 owners of Darksiders Warmastered Edition can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for €9.99 or $9.99. Xbox One owners will get the upgrade to the Xbox Series X|S version as a free update.

When the game launches on Xbox Series X|S, it will cost €29.99 or $29.99. At the same time, the price of the Xbox One version will increase from its current €19.99 / $19.99 to €29.99 / $29.99.

The game will still be available on PlayStation 4 for €19.99 or $19.99. The PlayStation 5 version will be released at a price of €29.99 or $29.99.

Okay, so I’m not super worried about upgrading to the PS5 version of Darksiders. Honestly, the first game was great back then, but it’s starting to show its age in 2026. Yeah, the PS5 version looks prettier with 4K and runs smoother at 60fps, but at the end of the day, the core gameplay still feels a bit old-school. It’s a nice visual bump, but it doesn’t fundamentally change how the game plays.

It might be best to skip this game and wait for the next installment, Darksiders 4. You’ll also save ten dollars by doing so.
