PS5 Sci-Fi RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Recasts Its Main Character Following Brutal Fan Feedback

The lead male character in the upcoming game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, will be played by a different actor when the game releases next year.

I finally got to play the closed beta for this sci-fi RPG – basically, a demo – on my PS5, along with everyone else on other platforms. The developers, Owlcat Games, really wanted to get a ton of feedback from us players, which is awesome!

So, I’ve been checking out the early gameplay, and honestly, it’s looking pretty good! The combat, where you duck behind cover, feels really satisfying and impactful. Plus, the game is set in the world of The Expanse, which already has tons of cool stories and lore, so there’s a huge amount of potential here.

However, many players have voiced common complaints. A frequent one is that the writing feels overly humorous or sarcastic, especially for those familiar with the original story, which generally had a more serious tone in both the books and the previous TV series.

The biggest issue is with the voices of the main male character and his twin brother, J, who are both voiced by the same actor. They simply don’t fit the roles, sounding surprisingly flippant and often too informal for the setting.

The voice acting doesn’t quite fit the tough, experienced space mercenaries the characters are meant to be. After receiving a lot of criticism, OwlCat is now re-recording lines to fix the issue.

The developers have decided to replace the voice actors for the male lead and the character J. Although the original actors did a good job, their performances didn’t quite convey the emotions the team was hoping for.

Indeed, this was my main criticism of the demo, which I previewed on PS5 last month.

I got to try out the beta with both characters, and honestly, the guy’s voice acting was really rough. It actually broke my immersion a few times – the female voice was okay, but the male one was a serious issue for me.

The author also criticized the male lead’s voice acting, saying it didn’t fit the character. They felt he sounded unnatural for someone meant to be a tough, experienced mercenary, and instead came across like an amateur trying too hard to seem convincing.

I sympathize with the actor. Although their performance isn’t strong, it seems like they were simply a poor fit for the role, rather than lacking ability. Regardless, the early release was meant to get feedback, and that’s exactly what the developer is receiving.

I’m really excited to hear OwlCat is working on making the character animations better, especially the facial expressions! They’ve also said they’re trying to make the game’s overall feel more consistent, which I think it needs. If you want to read the full details, you can check out their announcement on the official Steam page.
