Netflix’s New 8-Part Duffer Bros Sci-Fi Series Debuts To Rare Rotten Tomatoes Score

Netflix‘s Stranger Things creators beam up a new hit sci-fi series.

Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things has been a cornerstone of the streaming service for ten years, and its story isn’t over yet. Even though the main series has concluded, the world continues through animated spin-offs like the new Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, and more projects are in development. The show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, will remain heavily involved with Netflix, executive producing the upcoming 2026 series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, the Stranger Things animated spin-off, and a brand-new sci-fi/supernatural show that’s already receiving rave reviews.

Netflix’s new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, is off to a fantastic start, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first eight reviews. The show, which premiered on Thursday, May 21st, has only just been released, so this score could change as more reviews come in. This strong debut continues a successful run for Matt and Ross Duffer – the creators of Stranger Things – at Netflix.

Although the final season of Stranger Things received mixed reactions from fans, critics generally liked it. This marked the beginning of a successful period for the Duffer Brothers on Netflix, with season 5 currently holding an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Their newer shows, set to continue through 2026, are also performing well. The thriller Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen has earned an impressive 86% critics’ score, and Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 has a respectable 62%.

Critics have praised The Boroughs, with Greer Riddell of Collider calling it “Netflix’s latest sci-fi gem.” The review highlights the show’s clear inspiration from classic sci-fi films, comparing it to the storytelling style of Steven Spielberg and noting the involvement of the creators of Stranger Things. Simon Gallagher from ComicBook.com also gave a positive review on Rotten Tomatoes, stating the series is perfect for genre fans and has elements reminiscent of Stephen King. Gallagher also commended the strong performances and chemistry among the actors.

The Netflix series The Boroughs centers around a group of retirees in a retirement community who must fight a mysterious monster, even though no one takes their claims seriously. The show stars well-known actors like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Pullman. In a review for ScreenRant, Jordan Williams gave The Boroughs a 6 out of 10, describing it as a slow-paced but enjoyable take on classic sci-fi themes. While praising the strong performances of the cast, Williams felt the story itself wasn’t particularly original.

As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced whether The Boroughs will get a second season. However, because the show just launched, it’s still possible – Netflix will likely evaluate how well it performs before making a decision. In an interview with ScreenRant, co-creator Jeffrey Addiss mentioned a plan for three seasons overall. Whether The Boroughs returns remains to be seen.
