As a movie critic, I’ve been watching the MonsterVerse develop, and it’s become a surprisingly strong partner to Toho Studios, the original creators of Godzilla. However, let’s be honest, the Western attempts to modernize Godzilla since the 2014 reboot haven’t exactly been winning over critics. The sequels were pretty much universally panned. But here’s the fascinating part: audiences love these movies! Despite the critical failures, the box office numbers have been huge, proving the fans are hungry for more monster action. It’s a bit of a strange situation – critically flawed, yet financially thriving.
The MonsterVerse has featured several giant creatures, known as Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, or M.U.T.O.s. While some of these creatures are relatively weak and wouldn’t stand a chance against a powerful Titan like King Kong, a few are strong enough to defeat him, though it would be a difficult fight.
Camazotz Can Defeat Kong Through His Aerial Advantage
The MonsterVerse expanded into comics in 2014, releasing its first issue alongside the movie Godzilla. The comics have featured many monsters, but Titanus Camazotz is among the most frightening. Its name means “death bat,” and it looks like a giant, terrifying bat with powers common to bats, like echolocation and incredibly disorienting, high-pitched screams.
Camazotz can control storms like King Ghidorah, giving him a significant advantage over King Kong. Unlike Kong, who stays on the ground, Camazotz can fly and attack from above. He could even grab Kong, lift him high into the air, and repeatedly drop him, though Kong seemed unaffected by this strategy.
Camazotz emerged from Hollow Earth and battled King Kong on Skull Island. Though he initially gained the upper hand, a fighter jet unexpectedly appeared, disrupting Camazotz and allowing Kong to turn the tables. Had things gone differently, Camazotz would have drained Kong’s blood, leaving him completely lifeless.
Shimo’s Cryokinesis Can Freeze the Earth’s Oceans Solid
Shimo is an incredibly powerful, ancient titan with the ability to control the world’s climate. Known as the “Monster-Whose-Breath-Makes-The-Ocean-Into-Stone,” she’s considered one of the last of the most powerful titans, called Alpha Titans, living in Hollow Earth. Sadly, throughout most of her appearances in the MonsterVerse films, Shimo was controlled by Skar King.
Despite being naturally peaceful and kind, the Skar King turned Shimo into a powerful weapon of war. Shimo is even more dangerous than Godzilla, using a unique ice breath created by a strange energy source that can essentially halt atomic movement. It’s no surprise, then, that Shimo was responsible for starting the last Ice Age. This immense power would completely destroy Kong – freezing him instantly and then breaking him apart.
In their first fight, Shimo easily overpowered Kong, driving him away. She then showed incredible strength against Godzilla, establishing her as the stronger fighter. Luckily, Suko came up with a plan to rescue Shimo from the Skar King. Had Shimo been less kind, she could have easily defeated Kong after dealing with the main threat, but thankfully, that didn’t happen.
Mechagodzilla Doesn’t Need Much Time to Dispatch Kong
Mechagodzilla first appeared in Toho’s films, but was redesigned and rebuilt for the MonsterVerse. It was created by Apex Cybernetics to help humans fight Godzilla, but they lost control of it. This metal monster then went on a destructive rampage through Hong Kong, destroying a large portion of the city using powers similar to Godzilla’s.
Mechagodzilla’s most powerful weapon is a strong red beam that Godzilla couldn’t overcome with his atomic breath. However, Mechagodzilla’s greatest strength is its incredible durability. Built entirely from solid metal, this ‘Titanium Titan’ can withstand almost any physical attack. Even a combined assault from Godzilla and King Kong barely scratched it.
Mechagodzilla isn’t just powerful – it’s packed with weapons like grinding jaws, buzzsaw claws, jet boosters, and a devastating drill on its tail. It completely outmatches Godzilla, proving just how formidable it is.
Skar King Was Both Stronger and Smarter Than King Kong
The Skar King, who considers himself the leader of the Great Apes from Hollow Earth, attempted to conquer the surface world long ago. He’s much bigger and more powerful than Kong, but it’s his utter ruthlessness that truly sets him apart. Overcoming such a brutal and intelligent enemy would have been nearly impossible.
The Skar King’s surprising intelligence is what allowed him to create his brutal empire, beginning with the enslavement of Shimo. In battle, though, this monstrous ape-like creature depends on speed and flexibility rather than brute strength, skillfully avoiding even incredibly fast attacks like Godzilla’s atomic breath. Kong struggles to defeat the Skar King on his own and needs help to finally win.
In a direct fight, Kong would definitely win against the Skar King. Although the Skar King was a famous warrior long ago, he remained a powerful fighter even after thousands of years. It actually took a team effort – with Suko, Godzilla, Shimo, and Kong all working together – to finally defeat him.
King Ghidorah Remains a Fearsome Force of Nature
Though King Ghidorah appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong, he hasn’t actually battled King Kong in the MonsterVerse yet. This massive, three-headed dragon first showed up in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and lived up to its powerful reputation. The MonsterVerse treats Ghidorah as a truly formidable creature – a ‘daikaiju,’ meaning an exceptionally large and powerful monster – and refers to him by titles like Monster Zero and The Devil with Three Heads.
King Ghidorah is incredibly hostile and powerful, but his amazing abilities are what truly set him apart. Like Shimo, he’s a Titan who uses bio-electricity. He can attract lightning, essentially using storms to power himself. Ghidorah is also tougher than Mechagodzilla, and would easily defeat him in a fight.
Even without all of its abilities, Ghidorah is incredibly dangerous, and it might even use a Gravity Beam to really ensure victory. Its atomic breath, a powerful ray of electric light, shoots from any of its three mouths – and just one blast is enough to completely destroy Kong. Ghidorah can also create hurricanes with its wings, adding to the devastation of its lightning attacks. Ultimately, Kong doesn’t stand a chance against King Ghidorah.
Godzilla Has Been Gaining Power Since His MonsterVerse Introduction
Godzilla has endured as a cultural icon since his debut in 1953, playing the roles of villain, hero, and often something in between. He represents the consequences of humanity’s impact on nature, which makes it hard to see him as simply a ‘bad guy’. In recent films like those in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla has evolved into a protector of Earth, a powerful force who rises to defend the planet during its darkest hours.
Godzilla and King Kong have clashed multiple times, and Godzilla has almost always won. In both fights in Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla clearly dominated – he defeated Kong at sea and again in Hong Kong. Even their quick fight in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire suggested that Kong wouldn’t have been able to win against the King of the Monsters.
Godzilla might not be as physically strong as monsters like Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah, or as agile as Camazotz, and he doesn’t have ice powers like Shimo. However, Godzilla’s greatest strength is his ability to learn from battles and adjust his strategies. He could theoretically defeat King Kong, but it would likely only happen once. Kong is fortunate to have Godzilla as an ally rather than a foe.
